Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

What year is it?

2007.

The (unelected) House of Lords killed the Super Casino after the (elected) House of Commons past it. The House of Lords was less than half full on the night. With some Peers sleeping through the debate. An absolute political shambles. What a mad political system we have in this country.

The Super Casino idea was very much a product of the Tony Blair premiership. When he was replaced by Gordon Brown the daft concept was quietly dropped. Regardless of the details of how the scheme died, it was never going to survive.

The people associated with the Blackpool bid, the Blackpool MP's, the Blackpool newspaper, etc, began a campaign to get the decision of awarding the Super Casino to Manchester instead of Blackpool reversed. That was never going to happen. Ultimately it led to a lot of bad press and negativity about the Super Casino proposal, which was picked upon by the Peers in the House of Lords. The Super Casino proposal was rejected by just 3 votes by the Peers, with the House of Lords Chamber less than half full, and as I've already posted, with some Peers sleeping through the debate.(Lol!) Plans for the other 16 smaller casinos were voted against by the Peers as well.

Peers have rejected a decision to build the UK's first super-casino in Manchester by just three votes.

It means the plans will not be implemented, even though MPs backed the proposal by a majority of 24.

Peers rejected the Gambling Order backing Manchester by 123 votes to 120, while MPs supported it by 274 to 250.

During the Commons debate, Blackpool North and Fleetwood Labour MP Joan Humble said her town had been unfairly "marked down" by the Casino Advisory Panel.

'Problem gambling'

But supporters of the Manchester bid said the chosen area in the east of the city was in need of the investment and renewal the project would bring.

Manchester Central Labour MP Tony Lloyd said opposing the plans would be a "vote against Manchester".

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said that, after the defeat, she wanted "to reflect on the outcome" and promised new proposals.

Thanks for that Colin.

The video shows the true size of the Collar site.

I've walked the Collar site from close to the bridge to the end of the Collar site close to the North stand trying to imagine what kind of buildings or building, and their uses, such a big parcel of land could accommodate.

It's a great video of the campus. I've always wondered if it was possible to get a picture that included everything from the BMX and Velodrome, CFA, Connell College, Sports Institute, Stadium, Tennis & Squash, Athletics Arena and Coop Live. When viewed like that it gives credit to the Planning and Investment that has gone into everything.

On the CFA in particular, I had forgotten about the building at the back, presumably for the groundsman facility and maybe laundry. There does look to be more space for other stuff, maybe even a dedicated Academy building, in the future.
Another question is how many staff/functions will be moving from the CFA to the new offices and who takes their space? Maybe new functions created or existing sports science stuff expanded?

A couple of years old. The Coop Live Arena is under construction. The gas tower is still standing.
