Because it's cloudy most of the time. Putting them in the Sahara would be the sensible option
Solar panels don’t need direct sunlight to generate electricity, daylight works too admitted at a lower rate but they still work well on cloudy days.

I suggest you sort out a survival pack for when the grid goes down as it did in Spain. Leaving the energy policy of the country in the hands of clueless politicians will not end well.

Don’t get me wrong if I had my way we’d still be mining coal instead of importing it from all over the world, exploiting our gas and oil reserves. Nothing wrong with harvesting the sun’s energy as well to support the energy output though.

If you want to go and live off grid in the middle of nowhere they have their uses, the thought of using them to power a country is completely ridiculous. The UK hasn't had a coherent energy policy in over 40 years.
This is why you have mixed energy sources and not just one source. Renewable sources are currently supplementary. To be fair previous governments staked the house on natural gas because at the time gas demand was falling and the price was rock bottom. Thanks to Russia though that is no longer true so we have to change.

Renewables are currently the only short term answer because gas is going to remain an expensive commodity unless we frack domestic shale gas and the only other alternative is coal which is just poison.

The biggest failure on energy has been the failure to invest in nuclear, probably because gas was cheaper and nuclear isn't really profitable to operators. Obtaining the fuel is also something for militaries and governments, it isn't like you can buy a cheap barrel load of Uranium-235. It's also too late because commissioning plants takes decades.

It was 18 hours ............... hardly prepper territory. There are a few simple facts ie gas and oil - we are supplied via the international market which is subject to fluctuations in price. The sun and the wind in the UK is UK sun and wind so we harvest that and new battery storage capability improves the situation. An overdue improvement to the distribution network helps too. The only thing that inflates our costs are badly regulated companies we pay for it who are ripping us off.

Another typically ignorant comment from you I see. What exactly are these "perks" in the public sector? Surely you're thinking of the private sector, with its bonuses, 20% discounts and trips to concerts, sporting events etc?

It might work in your local 'Spoons but people aren't daft on here.

And just out of interest, what are you employed as since you seem to think everyone is somehow beneath you?
Final salary pension - Guaranteed by the taxpayer. A rarity nowadays in the private sector.

People certainly are daft on here.

What is it with you and Weatherspoon's ? The food ? the long walk to the loos?

Or just Progressive disdain for the working classes ?

No.

What council service offered to all have you never used, never might have used, or will never use?
But you distinctly said said 'no garden, no pay'.

So that surely means if you have no kids, why should you pay for the school system, no relatives in care etc, etc.

In other words, it is a tax, but you feel that you need to defend it... ;-)

I’ve got no idea whether you’re racist and nor do I especially care, and I’m even more indifferent about whether you actually witnessed a Roma person shitting on the pavement.

I’ll report back next time I get the opportunity to visit Hexthorpe and let you know what the people on the streets have to say about the Roma street shitting situation.
You know when you see a little head to head on these forums and you just think ignore it ,ignore it but you just can't resist?
I have to say Roma have got form on this....

And that's the posh ones in Westminster ! They were doing the over 10 years ago .

They are even shitting on the streets in America ...

If they can do that then I am sure they can probably do Hexthorpe. There I have saved you a trip.

I think that’s absolutely fine. Just move to regional charging and if they’re not providing their people with renewables, let them pay the full whack for their energy.
I remember when the whole fracking debate was going on, and I was thinking why has it never been seriously proposed that, rather than imposing these things on communities, they actually do a deal with them? Why shouldn't you get a discount on electricity if you have to live in the shadow of a dirty great nuclear power plant, for example? The fact that Scotland pays the highest rates is genuinely ridiculous when you look at how much of the electricity is generated up there.

I was a research scientist in the nuclear industry for 35 years, now retired. In all that time one reactor was built, Sizewell B, that one statistic shows how ridiculous our energy policy has been and when I look back on my career it was about keeping the old stuff running.
IMO it's being run on a knife edge and more than likely we'll be in big trouble in the future. The remaining nuclear that we have doesn't have long left and renewables are a complete waste of time.

I agree with this. I live around 10 miles from a previously proposed fracking site which got a lot of press due to protesters but it's gone now. I'd however take a 50% discount on my energy bill at risk of occassional 1.2 richter scale earthquakes.

Of course what would really happen is I'd pay the same because they'd drill baby drill, send the gas to the bottom of the country and then send it back up here to me and make me pay for the gas, the truck, the driver and the transport companies profit.

it could be the same bloke. Maybe he learnt his trade in Westminster and retired to Hexthorpe.

Perhaps read again my carefully-phrased previous question.

Did you get "free" education as a child?

Might you need social care in the future?

These days it's not even a charge for green waste disposal, it's a recharge for what the council has to pay to get it commercially composted.

Maybe if the Tories hadn't cut council funding from general taxation it would be different, but either you pay the charge or the council has to cut spending on something else.

Final salary pensions in local government stopped over 10 years ago.
You've proved your second point as accurate though.

It's a cynical cash grab, nothing more, nothing less.

Can you enter into a contact as a child to pay forever for your education. I don't think so, maybe you do. Enter a contract the moment your born hey ?

Pay insurance against social care when I'm older, I don't think so, the council would immediately make attachments to the properties I own.

But there you go, the Tories.... I knew it was just a bit of the old party line from you.....

I'm out of the country at the moment in our second home. Here we pay zero council tax, we pay the council for the bins, it's approximately 75 pence a month. Do you know, the roads are smooth, we have streetlights, the kids go to school.

I don't know how they do it, but they do.

It sounds like you don't know much about how UK councils are funded or their legal obligations. It's national policy not council policy to expect you to exhaust your assets before the council picks up your care costs.

How about finding out who pays for all these services at your overseas property? It obviously isn't you so it must be the natives.
