So no episode this week, due to being holed up at home in a Covid quarantine (I didn’t have it but Mrs Screamer and her grandson that lives with us did). As a result I was unable to get to the local community TV studio to produce Episode 21.

However, I did manage to make a little trip on Friday to make this report from a bridge 20 mins from me that was damaged by a truck attempting to go through it……..

The driver was caught!

NEWFANE, Vt. (WCAX) - A historical Vermont covered bridge was badly damaged by a box truck on Wednesday.

State police say around 8:15 a.m., a truck driver hit the Williamsville Covered Bridge in Newfane. They say the driver took off and was found a half hour later in Dover.

Police say the driver was Bay Van Nguyen, 49, of Lowell, Massachusetts.

He was cited for leaving after the accident, among other charges.

He is due in court in June

I'm surprised that truck didn't do more damage than that it must have been travelling to take those top planks off though. A bit of an odd question though, what type of wood was the damaged part of the bridge? it's very red.

A quick google search says either red oak or eastern red cedar
 
Just WOW that is some undertaking right there, imagine the force of a river to drag that big old bridge that far down the river and dump it on the bank.

Who pays for the reinstallation? A private person? The town/state?

Early on in the video it mentions that it was built in 1919 yet the carpenter/builder (who looks like officer Murphy from the Robocop films) mentions 1840?

Nearly a quarter of a way through the 100 bridges now :)

Yes I’m not sure why he mentioned 1840 unless he refers to the year that design was first patented.
The cost will have come from federal and local state funding and FEMA the natural disaster agency

Apart from being hit by vehicles, floods are the biggest cause of loss. There were 600 bridges in 1900 and a huge flood in 1927 took 100 out!
As we’ve seen in my series Storm Irene caused a lot of damage. By now the majority have all had abutments strengthened and other parts too so they can withstand strong storms. Thankfully we don’t get hurricanes and tornados up here.
One of the hundred bridges is currently “away off its spot” for repairs and will be put back.
The last bridge to be lost was this one in 2021 to arson
