Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu produced an impressive comeback to beat Veronika Kudermetova and set up an intriguing fourth-round meeting with Coco Gauff at the Italian Open.

Britain's Raducanu beat the Russian 5-7 6-0 6-1.

Unlikely to get past Gauff but pleased to see a slight return to form.

When she won the US, her return of serve was characterised by taking the ball early on the top of the bounce. She stopped doing that until yesterday when it improved her no end. Maybe Petchey has had a positive influence or it’s just easier on the slower clay courts.
I expect Coco to put her to sleep.

I like Petchey, hopefully he can install some confidence back in her game.
expect Coco to win comfortably but never know.

Conflict in Kashmir.

Conflict in the Middle East.

USA lurches towards fascism.

Piling in on Emma Radacanu is the only logical response
Ten pages of pissing and moaning on bluemoon about a young person trying to make her way in the world from people who know next to fuck all about her. Sadly seems the norm on here these days.

Hope she gets back to her best

Despite her falling off after winning the US open, she clearly has something. People say it was a fluke, it wasn't, you've still got to get through the rounds and beat whoever is in front of you.

She has ability, it was evident when she come onto most people's radar at Wimbledon before winning the US Open.

If she gets it right, finally stay injury free and gets back to playing in a way that suits her strengths, there's no reason at all why she can't be a real contender. It's really down to how badly she wants it. She's still only 22, even if it takes another year or two of steady progression, she's got time.

It's strange how so many don't want her to succeed.

Honestly, I reckon anyone criticising her has never actually played an individual sport to any level, let alone tennis.

Again, I have no affinity to her, but she's literally still in the top 50 female tennis players in the World. In the World. Straight away that puts her top 5% out of just those that are actually good enough to be pro. The amount of time and effort it takes even to be a bog standard pro tennis player is massive, before you even get to talent. It's kind of insulting to all of them to suggest she's there without even really trying or taking it seriously, she's not, neither are any of them.

In individual sport there's nowhere to hide. You can't just pass to a team mate, you can't let someone else cover for your mistakes. If you play shit, you lose. If you're low on confidence, you lose. If you're a bit injured, or unfit or ill, you probably lose. There's no coasting or taking you're eye off the ball, because then you lose. And lose. And lose again.

I think it’s maybe a British thing. Reasonably successful individual sports people very rarely seem to be particularly well liked by the general public.
I think it's more a tennis thing, possibly because the BBC devote a fortnight to the sport and pretty much ignore it the rest of the year.
Olympic athletes are generally well liked, as are cyclists and successful F1 drivers. - I know a few don't like Lewis Hamilton but that seems to be because of some of his supporters rather than because of Lewis himself.
I'll leave footballers out of this as football is often too tribal for sensible discussion on opposition players; which is how it should be.

Ok so we should hate Tennis British players because the BBC cover Wimbledon. makes sense.

I haven't seen one post on this thread that suggests anybody hates her, the whole idea that people who criticise her hate her instead is stupid.

Criticising is a form of hate , it’s obvious some have it in for her and want her to fail, I’ll go for bitterness and jealousy.
