The game summed up our entire season yesterday.
We look absolutely devoid of any effort and just want to play a slow, easy to read, dreadfully boring posession based game when it's abundantly clear that it's been found out. Palace had a game plan yesterday and they executed it brilliantly and fair play to them. They knew they'd get the counter, knew they'd get a chance and we didn't disappoint - the old 'one shot, one goal' undoing us again and another to file with so many other games over the seasons. It is truly staggering how many times we fall for it.
One thing I did wonder is why we didn't just let Palace have the ball for a few minutes, sit deep and counter them. WIn the ball, pass to KdB to play it long for Haaland/Marmoush/Doku/Savinho to get onto - they would terrify any team but it's hard for them if they have 10 players in front of them whilst Dias is busy passing it to and from Akanji.
If there was a defining moment of the season it was Haaland giving the ball to Marmoush for the penalty. Any striker with anything about him, snatches that ball and smashed into the net. Haaland was cowardly for that but it summed up his game to be honest. I've said it before, he is the best striker I've ever seen but he's clearly in the wrong team. We have to make a decision about him soon and I suspect that decision is bound up with any decision we make on Pep too. Games like yesterday should be decided by Haaland - we brought him in to put the chances away but at the moment we can't create chances and he just sits close to their defenders anyway. As stupid as it sounds, I did wonder if we'd be any better or worse with Mateta in our side. How mad is that when Haaland's numbers are insanely good?
We've completely lost our attacking sense of play and if this continues into the WCC or next season, we will be heading to the same bracket as Spurs and United. That might sound crazy but you'd never imagine either of those teams where they are 2 seasons ago.
Pep needs a break now from this season but he's unlikely to get one. The club have to decide whether he has the ideas, energy and passion to go to the end of his contract. If I'm completely honest, I think he's burnt out. He's frustrated and it's sad to see him this way. Without any question he's the most revolutionary manager the PL have ever had and his list of revolutions can't even be matched by Wenger, Fergie, Clough, Mercer, Revie all put together.
However, his style of football needs to change. He needs to think about his style and trying to bring in some of the directness from his old adversary - Klopp. If Pep can find a blend of possession and directness then I think he will get the best out of Haaland, and smash teams. If he continues to ignore the opposition then he risks a humiliating end to his City career I'm afraid and he certainly does not deserve that.
I can't wait for this season to finish and I'm sure the club feel the same. We need to bring in some new blood and some top class players. The club should be looking at Huijsen and Wirtz and moving fast and hard for that calibre of player.
Overall, a depressing day but well done to Palace. I hope their fans enjoy it.
