Rodri is a bad example. He was slated to fuck in his first season with us, and a lot of people said he'd never be good enough to replace Fernandinho. Most of our top players were not household names when we signed them; they became household names after joining us. It hasn't worked out in recent years, but let's not pretend that we've always signed ready-made stars, because we haven't.The City of old would have been at the table for players like Neves or Vitinha. They had Rodri at the club whilst Fernandinho was there. They've become reactive rather than proactive and their spending in recent years has been more and more erratic.
I hope Gibbs-White proves me wrong, but they've used their resources appalling in recent years.
