Hugo Viana | Director of Football

It's become really clear they are clashing over what is needed in the squad.

In fact I doesn't appear like Pep wanted any of the January signings. You can see it from the way he talked , the club got me young centre backs , the club said they needed Marmoush etc .

Then on the offensive lately saying he doesn't want all these players, that his team are incredible in training etc

Strange times.

Strange post.

its funny Pep said 2 days ago there wont be many changes and by today half of the squad on the market if good offers come lol.

You don’t go telling the world many of your players are up for sale. Unlike United.

You are looking for something that is not there. Pep has always talked about the club/management 'giving' him players. he has said on a number of occasions that he is grateful to the club or Tixi giving him <insert player's name here>

Think Gonzalez is the Gundogan replacement, we'll need KDB, Bernardo, Ederson replacements if they leave but think Bernardo stays.
Reijnders, Simmons, Gibbs-White are our midfield targets so we'll probably cover KDB and Gundo spots. We do need right winger, right back and goalkeeper along with those 3 though.

Can’t see a winger unless Doku leaves seems unlikely. Good chance we don’t play with wingers if the full back rumours are correct
It isn’t about targets though we have to shift enough players to have room. Thats why I think it will be 2 mid too fullbacks and any keepsrs. That will be fine with what we already have

Another supporter who believes his opinion is fact.
So much is known by people who know fuck all.

I wouldn’t come to any conclusions from what you perceive might be happpening.

That’s just like saying; ‘well I’ve got a 5, a 7, a 3 and an 8, so reckon them all up and it comes to 23’, when it could be 5(7-3)+8.

I think Pep asked for and was given a bigger say in signings but it is clear the club makes the ultimate decisions.

Ultimately, that's what should happen when a club operates a DoF model. I am sure he has always made clear what he wants in terms of attributes and the DoF finds players who meet the criteria set out by Pep, in addition to any standard attributes we have re personality/behaviour.

Viana needs to look out for himself. Pep might leave next summer or summer 2027. the buddy buddy era is over that Txiki had with Soriano and Pep. Viana makes a blunder window and no one will hold his hand...

The separation between coach and DoF is a bizarre thing - surely they need to be on the same page, working closely together?

Can't surely be a case of - here you go - do something with this lot - like football Ready Steady Cook.

Bit of both.

The coach will let the director of football know what he needs but he doesn't have as much time to check out every player that meets the criteria. The director of football will come back with options and probably ask the coach which they prefer.

The director of football will also speak to the chairman etc... to weigh up the financial benefits of a player; resale value, older players cheaper etc...

Director of football is basically a football person with knowledge of the game with a bit more time than the coach to carry out other tasks whilst also considering the clubs future beyond just the manager.

They obviously then go and negotiate with agents, players, clubs for players chosen. As I said, just jobs that the coach would never have time for.

Spot on. It is known, for eg, that the DoF puts a value on potential targets and we do not exceed that figure. If the demands of the selling club or the player exceed that, we walk away. Alexis Sanchez was just such a case.
