Liam Delap

Top 3 strikers on the prem?? What are you smoking mate?
You'll see come next season mate. Got laughed at on here last summer for saying that City are silly for selling Delap. I said he'd command a 50m+ pound fee in 2 seasons but he achieved that by January. He's better than most strikers on the market and HG.

Is the £50m fee in the room with us?

He's a decent striker, no more no less.

in 32 games he scored 32 goals and 8 assists in the PL2 with our under 23's. So not just a one season wonder. Just turned 22 a few months back.

10 non-penalty goals for a team that wasn't even in the Championship 2 seasons ago. He will clearly be a 20+ a goal season striker for Chelsea. These do not grow on trees.

Mbuemo is a winger, Wood and Watkins are not better. Come on now. Great season for Wood but he's turning 34 this year. You would really rather have Chris Wood than Liam Delap? To each their own but you'd be alone on that island. Watkins, decent player for sure. He also was coming off the bench for Villa during the most important part of the season? Rogers is the better player out of them. Also turning 30 this year.

I would without a doubt take Delap over either of these lads. For this season coming, and obviously going forward.

In my opinion, the only player you could argue is Kai Havertz. But for me Delap has a higher ceiling so I'd rank him 3.
He got 12 goals in the league, 14th top scorer and he struggled in the championship.

He’s not proven anything yet, least of all that he’s the 3rd best striker in the league.

12 goals got a terrible side in his first season in the premier league. That’s pretty good. He’s a young player who of course has taken time to develop.

He’s look a top talent. Clearly city thought that as well. He just needed time

Can’t keep them all especially when you have erling for 10.

We as fans need to get used to seeing the academy players moving on. Some won’t be good enough for city but good enough for the majority of premier league teams. Some will go out of frustration and some will go due to bad timing like palmer.

All we can do is make the decision based on the needs of the team at that time. Khaldoon was saying txiki has recouped 1 billion. Goldmine, reputation will only get better with players like Delap moving to clubs like Chelsea.
To be fair we haven’t really kept or fully developed any of the academy players other than foden. It’s becoming impossible for any academy youngster to make it at city, even when they are good enough.

You say needs of the team, but I’d argue it’s often short term thinking. We don’t seemingly have the patience to develop them and instead want to spend huge amount of money on players who aren’t always as talented.

The academy is all about making ££££££££££ & it does that

Personally I have always felt we should give our youngsters more of a chance. Those who shall not be named always seemed to have players from their academy in the squad who were never really consistent first teamers but were still good enough to be rotation players. Wes Brown is great example not a world beater but good enough to be in the squad for years.

I think the fact that half our academy our regularly turning out for champions league teams proves they could have been squad players for us.

I know they’re different players but what money do we realistically save by selling Palmer for
£45m and then buying Doku at £55m. I would have thought even with the “pure profit” thing it would be cheaper to keep palmer.

Goes back to making a decision on a player at a certain time. I keep banging on about palmer who I would have loved to stay. However, the club just came off the back of a treble and we thought the squad had more to give and reluctantly let palmer go imo. The player could have stayed 1 year longer without asking for a move.

So it’s easy to go either way on the academy. Profit will be made and mistakes will happen. Pep and co can only go on what is infront of them.

What if the player is determined to leave and we want him to stay? You let the player in his position go? That will depend on age, injuries, impact etc.

I don’t think there is anyway to avoid players going and doing well somewhere else while still trying to win the top prizes. We incorporate every academy player who may or may not be great and we won’t be winning anything.

Palmer is the stand out issue. We made good money but lost a very good player.

They wouldn't have become those players if they had stayed though as they wouldn't have been able to displace the quality players in front of them. I think that, in most cases anyway, they preferred to leave to get regular first team football. Young players often aren't patient enough to wait around for a season or two.

It has worked out best for all parties on the whole.

We have seen Foden, Bobb, O'Reilly, Lewis, McAtee and JSP get game time this season. That's pretty good IMO.

I'm glad he rejected United for Chelsea (whom I don't like either).

It just shows that little bit more respect for City imo.

In a shot side that’s not bad at all. Becoming the 3rd best in the league hardly means a great deal. Considering there are only 2 genuine top class strikers in the league. Watkins is probably 3rd.
