Juventus (N) | CWC | Post Match Thread

Rewards have been proven to outweigh the risks over seven or eight (?) years.

By Eddie’s standards that was an uncommon unforced error, which, when you win 5-2, demonstrates how dominant City were.

What was great was the save he later made and the number of times he pinged accurate long balls to ERl, who displayed the kind of touch Riyad would be proud of, and gave a performance that made mugs of those who think we would be better off with a different CF.

Second goal was more disappointing but something to learn from.
Dead right. There will always be a howler or two a season but what Ederson has is this unique ability to shrug them off. That is gold when it comes to goalkeeper pyscology. He ballsed that one up and then proceeded to spray beautiful passes around the pitch like he was on the park on a sunday. You cannot learn that and that's why he has always been the rock that the Pep team is built on.

Obviously it’s only 1 game and obviously you can still drive a bus through our centre backs should you so wish, but even so it’s impossible to not be excited by what we produced, knowing that we can only improve.

We actually had a coordinated high squeeze which was forcing Juventus to play longer than they wanted to, which was allowing us to win the ball back and sustain attacks. Something which has been absent for maybe 2 years.

We saw a notable increase in forward passes and had 3rd man runners to then receive layoffs.

We had genuine width from full back, but also the flexibility whereby both full backs were both holding width and also inverting at times, with Doku and Savinho having the same flexibility to play inside or outside. Not a good game for the “Pep doesn’t like freedom” brigade.

The new signings are literally plug and play, which is exactly what was required. I think Cherki will probably need more time than Ait-Nouri and Reijnders, but not so much time where he can’t contribute from the off.

The vibes around the squad seem immaculate as well, and this is important. Them living together 24/7 at the moment is no doubt helping to bring them closer and create bonds with the new staff too.

I think we’re back.
The forward passes & the runners is definitely a new tweek & it worked really well.
The performance was so refreshing to watch & i cant wait for the new season to start.

I was very sceptical about this tournament being now, but actually I now think it may turn out to be a huge benefit.

You know some people are never happy unless they can have a moan about something. We’re all wired differently and so it’s just human nature that some will want to think negatively about a 5-2 win.
Others will enjoy perfectly well what they have seen on the pitch.
Improved performance.
Players better understanding of each other’s game.
A team that is playing fast free flowing football whilst maintaining control of the game through possession.
A team that will be ready to start the new season fast. A couple of weeks holiday at the end of this will not seriously affect the physicality of our players.
A coaching team that looks really energetic with fresh ideas.
A team that is playing like a team again, everyone fighting for each other, in and out of possession.
This wasn’t a pre-season friendly.
This was a Club World Cup game where we have shown the whole world who the real Man City are and I for one will enjoy it for what it was.
A great team performance bar none.

Not that they are any authority whatsoever … but when haaland scored it said on the tv “36th goal of the season”

But i would say its the start of the new season .
You know they are playing too many games when no one knows where one season ends and the other begins!

Outstanding and smooth performance. The only drawback is the fact that Juventus scored two goals from two shots on target.

Edit: sorry, didn´t see it was already posted

Just watched Bernardo’s post match interview on the OS.
You can see exactly why he will make a brilliant captain.
We’re so blessed to have him.

My dads been watching City since 1938 so hes a right moaning bastard but even he said its the best City team we have had in ages. All ball players.
I'm part of the youth policy - only started watching us around 1965 and even I am trying not to get mildly excited.

(I also know Al Hilal could smash us and we get relegated this season. Go on, laugh, but you know it's a possibility)

The best performance i can remember since, maybe Newcastle? But that seemed a bit lucky, this one was by design. Control was there, but you can see Lijnders has brought in a different type of directness to the play at times as well. When Haaland scored, and also Nunes run for the own goal, everyone turned to Lijnders - it must be something he is working on with them. We did that before with Sterling & Sane quite a lot, maybe we are bringing it back with the fullbacks.

Reijnders looks like a proper player, exactly what we have been missing. He's a mix of Gundo and Kovacic, has both their traits but also some of the physicality of Rodri - a total footballer.

I thought Haaland looked excellent when he came on, looking to get involved a lot more and that touch out the sky just shows he's not just a tap in merchant.

Great win and the actual score against a bit second string Juve is not really a point. For me the point is:

- the new players have shown their quality and that, to a greater or lesser extent, they will be immediate reinforcements — for example, Reijnders looks like he’ll be an excellent number 8;

- Cherki clearly has limitless talent in terms of technique and vision — if his mentality and fitness catch up, he’ll be a monster;

- we’ve slightly changed our structure in attack; Art Nouri and Nunes can offer much more offensively than Walker or Gvardiol — which will also automatically create more space in the middle for Foden/Bernardo/Cherki/Omar/Reijnders/Rodri - in short, for everybody;

- post-injury Rodri might well become the Rodri we knew before the injury;

- the players, Pep, and the new coaching staff — their reactions look different compared to last season: fresh, excited, with new spirit and a sense of challenge;

- contrary to some opinions, it wasn’t a bad defensive performance. We limited Juve to 5 shots, only 2 of which were on target. Dias was excellent, very aggressive against Vlahović.

Honestly this CWC might be a good thing to get a fresh squad hitting the ground running. We looked great out there minus Eddie.
I know Eddie fucked up but surely Blues can see why he's vital to our system ?
Juve pressed all game, (well the few times we were in our own half) so Eddie pinged balls straight to Haaland. I doubt any other keeper in the PL could consistely do that.
He, IMO, is vital to how Pep wants us to play. We have to accept the fuck ups, including mad charges out to concede a penalty, if we want Pep ball.

Not sure what you’re on about.

As a team last night I thought we were excellent all over the pitch with lots of competition for each position. However Akanji has made it easier for Pep in selecting his defensive options by making himself last choice in that position.

You're not allowed to criticise a player, even when they play poorly, because there's some top top blues that will come after you.

What’s going on? I can’t believe everyone is celebrating this like we are fantastic again.
We played a second string Juve side who clearly weren’t up for it.

They still scored 2. Our defence is a shambles.

I hope we are, the energy was noticeable and some of the forward players seem to be on it.

As a team though it’s so easy to counter on us. It’s just not being addressed.
Yawn
