Called up but never played..

If he was never an academy product, do you think we would look at him? Is his HG status pushing him to the front of the (admittedly) small queue

I think this signing is a big of a risk you can get, if the idea is for him to he #1 V Wolves

I accept there are no risk free signings but this makes me just as nervous as if we were buying Spain’s 3rd choice keeper from Levante
If I think its possible we could be interested in a 22y old GK who just had an extraordinary season in a promotion winning championship side, breaking multiple historic GK records while doing so and being called up to the national team despite not even playing in the first division, who is also wanted by another top5 PL side who will be playing CL football to be their first choice GK, a summer when we are looking to sign a GK? Yeah, I think someone like that would probably be under consideration. Would he be our first choice on the transfer market without his HG status? Maybe not.
Does the HG and club trained status, that the club knows him, his strengths and weaknesses really well, not to mention that a deal could easily be done thanks to our buy back clause help? Of course.

We are in a position where we have significant HG issues that must be solved. Having two non-homegrown GKs when we have a significant non-homegrown problem is a luxury we cant afford at the moment.

I hope Ortega doesn’t start as #1. I thought his performances this season, particularly Arsenal away, were really, really bad
I thought he was a really good #2 and possibly better in some situations than Ederson. And then he played more games last season and I certainly wouldn't want to see him as #1 for any length of time

I think we are negotiating as there was a sell on fee of 6 million or 25% I think, so probably trying to get that off the 40 mill. Since he's coming back to us. Newcastle were quoted 30 + 5.
In theory whatever they would have accepted from Newcastle, after yountake away any sell-on, they could accept from us straight up.

Goalkeeper is only as good as what's in front of him 90% of the time. Last season we gave up chance after chance on the break and set pieces.
That said I remember Joe Hart at WHL in 2010 (was there) - Spurs should have won by 5 or 6. World Class that day was Joe.
I'm old school - I want a GK who makes saves simple as. That's not for Pep though - so not sure Trafford fits the bill

I expect we will pay the full whack
It doesn’t really fill your fanbase with confidence if you don’t think your new keeper is worth as much as you thought he was 2 years ago….
£19m is what he was valued at 2 years ago.

Based on the start of last season Burnley are willing too let any player go for far less, they went top in August and sold most of their best players.

We haven't agreed a fee that is the buyback.
If 2 clubs are willing to pay £35m, then that's why wages etc come in to play
It would be more straightforward if we had decided to use our buyback option which we may well end up doing.
Depends.

If they were supposedly looking for 32m form Newcastle (who only bid 27m). And they then had to pay us 6m of that per our sell on, they would have got a max of 26m for him.

Why would we just go and give them 40m as the buy-back, when we could maybe get him for a good 10m less.

Hence the claims of negotiations.

I'm going to buck the trend here. I'd love to take him back. Mention all these fancy foreign keepers but he's my first choice every day of the week and twice on Sundays. He'll make mistakes but I defy anyone to tell me a keeper who hasn't.

If a club as shrewd as Newcastle - particularly known for their eye for young, homegrown talent are showing interest in him, that alone speaks volumes to me

He’s not the finished product, no one’s saying that. But at just 22, with a few more years of development at City, he could become World Class Goalkeeper and England's number 1 goalkeeper for a decade.

Joe Hart was 400k. Imagine if we bought Shrewsbury’s keeper now!

Also some keepers come through youth ranks or are free transfers etc.

Whilst Trafford doesn’t particularly excite me I think it’s unfair to judge him by fee comparison. I think it’s much better to look at his ‘form’ in the PL last time…..

Joe Hart was bought before the takeover, we were shopping in very different markets back then, but I agree mate.

Also Joe Hart spend a season on loan at Birmingham before he broke fully into our team, was nominated for PFA young player of the year whilst on loan there and was put into the PFA team of the year.

That is some feat considering some of the GKs that were in the league at the time.

Trafford doesn't even touch Harts weak left wrist at the same age.

Every club in the country wanted Joe Hart at that particular time, Mancini recognized it and went with him.

As a replacement for Ortega, it's an absolute no brainer. Club trained and quality. But it relies on him being willing to come in as second choice. I'd be less convinced about him replacing Ederson as number 1. If we're wanting a new number 1, we should be looking at the best keepers in the world.
The teams with the best keepers didn’t get them from other elite teams they just scouted the best players

End of the day ederson. Wants out by the looks of it and we have the chances buy the future number one of England who loves Manchester City and knows the club inside out so this is a great signing for us and he will be our number one for years to come and maybe he does start as number two but let get behind him .

The only issue with this signing I have is that he is another project, and another high-risk and high-reward project.

I don't have an issue with a couple of those if we are putting them in positions where we are strong.

But the transfer policy at the club over the past 2-3 years has been to buy projects and develop them, all while the core has been aging, and no sure-fire replacements or talent are coming in to make up for it.

True
I wasn't meaning that we should pay the buyback, just that there would be less negotiations.
