Old Maine Road photos thread

Nothing like parking the car in Moss Side on matchday and being swarmed by urchins offering to "mind your car", safe in the knowledge it was essentially paying protection racket money to primary school kids. I have heard more than a few stories of people who didn't pay and came back to cars more beaten up than the car in the bonus level of the Street Fighter 2 arcade. Once met a guy who said he took his Rottweiler to the game and left it in the backseat. When the kids came he said "My dog will take care of the car", to which the kid said "Does your dog know how to put out fires?"
Was that Guy Bernard Manning by any chance, though I think his was an Alsatian :-)

I never dreamt football could go from the excitement of attending a game on the kippax.
To the boring over priced experience it is now
True but you’ve got to factor in age also. We’d be sat in the Main Stand now with a flask. It was pretty boring in there as I remember.
Growing up on the Kippax was an experience lads can’t have now though. I get that. Loved it there.

If you've seen them ,you probably would have seen David Shawcross and Steve Fleet play aswell.
David Shawcross certainly, Steve Fleet no. Steve was no 3 goalkeeper behind Trautmann and Dowd by the time I started watching City.

Shawcross could have gone on to become a top midfielder, unfortunately injuries destroyed his career.

When I first started watching the reserves, he was just coming back from injuries circa 65/66 season.
Really skillful player.
Fleet was also playing in the reserves along with Dowd and Ogley vying for the goalies jersey.

Steve Fleet moved to Wrexham in 1963. Ogley arrived in 1963 after the retirement of Trautmann and the transfer of Fleet. He left for Stockport in 1967 in exchange for Ken Mulhearn.

The quiet but gradually building buzz and anticipation to today's pyrotechnics, DJs, shouting presenters, warnings you don't get or need anywhere else, the servile pushing of whatever issue is unnecessarily being promoted, the over stewarding. In short, it's a shit experience now. Imagine if we weren't any good.
Does your post mean the only reason you go these days is because we’re good?

Parked up for a night match and a young girl asked if she could mind my car. After assuring me that, yes, she would keep a close eye on it after I (jovially) asked her, she walked away, then turned round and came back to add - "at least I will until 8 o'clock as that's bedtime"

We played Everton three times in the Cup in our 65-66 promotion season. Crowds weren't segregated in those days and there were plenty of scousers in the Kippax giving Stan Horne the full blast of monkey chants. I loudly let them know that they were the worst supporters in the land but it just fell on deaf ears. When we played Liverpool in the following seasons as marked by these photos I transferred my worst supporters to that lot instead but again without response.

A pity it took a tragedy at Heysel to wake up the authorities and cause them to introduce segregation which is far from perfect but is better than nothing. It should never have been necessary in the first place but there are a few missing brain cells with some persons whose main ambition in life is to spoil the joys of life for the rest of us.
I remember reading somewhere that Stan Horne played his best ever game for City, away at Goodison in one of the 3 fa cup ties that season...,I imagine the taunts were louder at their place. Stan must have had a really strong mentality. I sometimes feel he is over looked when mid to late 60s City are discussed...

Bless her. Would love to know if she ever did fight off gangs of car robbers in that short window to 8pm :-)

Is that the Winslow Boy at the front?
Little scouse urchin ... light fingered ... 'could be' on Winslow street (!?) = causation

I see what you did there ;-)

I haven't a clue tbh, the stories been rewritten a few times.

Wouldn't be surprised if the little blight on that street went on to drink shite loads of milk n later turned semi-pro for Southport F.C
