Morgan Gibbs-White

Not sure he would. It’s his club.
Well if Arsenal wanted him after City made a move, they'd have to show their hand. To date, I've not heard or seen anything concrete from Arteta regarding Ezé.

After the Paqueta deal fell through, we were rumoured to have bid for Ezé, but Palace wanted £85m. We walked away & spent £53m on Nunes. Fuckin madness... \0/

The idea that MGW comes in and instantly improves us because he offers legs is wrong. Even highly intelligent players like Rodri and Bernardo needed a season to get Pep's positional football. You may be the best athlete in the world but if you don't understand how the team moves in attack and defence, when to pass the ball sideways and when to take risks, your athleticism is pointless.

Football is a simple and great game to watch, but creating a top, top team is utterly difficult. If we fans think of midfield play in 4 or 5 parameters, Pep thinks in 14-15, realising that there are hard to calculate trade-offs regarding technique, intelligence, power, stamina, speed, defensive ability, being dangerous in attack, etc. There are so many moving parts. There's no simple algorithm for success.

In short, those thinking MGW would instantly improve us if played over Bernardo are a bit clueless. Now that Bernardo may start once in a week, his performance levels are likely to improve. He's, what, 3 years younger than Salah.

More of a winger if anything, esp in a Pep team, he’d do a Grealish on him, he’d never see midfield
Agree. I've often thought Pep would move players like him to be an 8 because he did with David Silva, I expected it with Jack but it never really happened. Silva was an exception it seems.

We finished 3 points behind Arse and 6 Forest just fyi

You mean the Arsenal team that threw away points in an inconsequential PL, that was already won by Liverpool, due to an ambition to win the CL?

They trashed a Madrid team that we got embarrassed by. Furthermore this same Arsenal team toyed with us at the emirates and we embarrassingly couldn’t beat them with a man advantage at the Etihad.

We have a large gap to close even on Arsenal currently and Forest is closer to us currently on the basis of our performances the past season which is the only objective metric.

In terms of physique and understanding midfield play Jack and David are very different. The latter thrives in small spaces. Few players are as intelligent as David.

They don’t even play the same position. Eze is a left winger while Nunes is a CM. If they were both supposed to play the position then the recruitment team failed once again because apparently players who make a name for themselves are supposed to switch positions for us.

The reason we went for Paqueta was to replace Philips, who in turn was supposed replace Fernandinho. We then showed interest in Ezé & then finally opted for a box to box midfielder in Nunes (who I never rated), only for Pep to publicly lament that Matheus doesn't have the intelligence to play central midfield for City.

Nunes was a panic buy. But are you telling me it took us spending £53m on Nunes to learn he was useless for what Pep wanted? Especially coming so soon after the error of buying Philips?

Those moves certainly weren't our finest hours regarding transfers.

If we wanted to buy paqueta to replace Philips who we wanted to replace Fernandinho then we had already failed. Paqueta is a CM, Philips is a DM and Fernandinho was a DM.

You do not appear to understand the term objective. Points difference is 'objective'
Performance is 'subjective'

The difference in either last season is certainly not the 'only metric' performance over the latter half of the season is another metric. Performance over three seasons is a further metric.

You are welcome to suffer in your delusion that we are closer to Forrest than Arsenal if you want but I rather think most rational commentators will consider us likely to be closer to Arsenal than to Forrest next season on virtually any objective metric you choose.

Paqueta was played as a CDM for WHU on many occasions. I think the feeling at City was he could defend (albeit he's a bit on the rugged side), he had a good engine & he was also creative. I could see the sense Paqueta made tbh.

Also, Fernandinho was more a No 8 before we bought him. It's at City where he became a defensive legend of the dark arts.
