I agree but last season was a difficult one for an emerging player to make his mark. Even in the good times we are no longer the kind of club who is able to develop players slowly. One big match tends to follow another and the likes of McAtee rarely get to start in big games. I don't know what this lads ceiling is but doubt very much it reaches the heights of a Palmer or a Foden.

Is £25mill mediocre nowadays? With a decent sell-on just in case, I'd say that was fair myself but then I've never particularly been overawed with him.

Agree, particularly on the point about a difficult season. However, we are not blameless, with the case of youth and transition not helped by sub-optimal rotation and inadequate use of substitutions.

I think it is yes. And the club having rejected it I guess suggests they think they can either get more or are willing to risk him going for free after being around another year.

His issue might be though that if he doesn't get a move, there is little incentive for us to play him in his last year at the expense of other academy players. Which is where his agent might push for a move and the buying clubs to up their offers.

Depends on the actual offer though, perhaps Forest(?) were hoping for a straight up £25m. Sell-on and buy back clauses add a lot of value to a transfer.

Maybe, who knows. Trust the club on that. But think we will end up getting around 30m and the right sell-ons and buy-backs on top. And rightly so.

I'm ok with the wait. He doesn't take up one of the 21 squad spaces, selling him doesn't help our current issues in any way. He is a capable body to have around and on low wages. Not much to lose by either keeping him or holding out for a higher fee.
 
I feel he is a late developer and quite a bit of a nice boy.
Too shy for PL, very close to his family and homesick soon.

Many kids had a great development in Bundesliga clubs where the supportive atmosphere help them a lot to have fun and feel good.

Should pack his bag, kiss mum and go to Dortmund, Stuttgart, Leverkusen or Frankfurt to play offensive football against less tight defences to show his huge talent. His personality IMO needs a little lift and it's much tougher to get it in the PL with British media sniffing around.

Clubs want to see a next step before splashing 40m on the table.
Palmer is a completely different character, no comparison.

Harvey Elliott.

He's a good player, had a good impact in the u21s Euros (as did McAtee, yes), but maybe he's got longer left on his contract.

His excuse for not playing more at Liverpool would be that Salah plays in his position. It's a decent excuse. McAtee barely got a game for us when we had an injury crisis. It's not something that would make people desperate to pay huge money.

He'll be begging City for a move by the end of August. There's no way he'll make it at City now, there are too many already ahead of him.
The lad should have stayed at Sheffield United and built his career from there.

Elliott is a little **** but he’s a fucking cracking player.

Could do with Dortmund coming in for him he’d smash it there.
 
So I wonder where we are with this, Jack is going to Everton, Spuds are in talks with City about Sav, does this impact those teams' interest in James? Are Forrest totally out of the picture?
