With the Ederson news I’d take him.
Would rather have Trafford and Donnarumma than Trafford and Ortega.

I'll never understand why people think Eddie was a main factor in our build-up. Sure he had assists and great long passes but they were still rare. Don't like stats much as they count numbers and not quality but I feel Eddie mostly kicks the ball to the next CB or DM - as most others too.

As if Eddie is a decisive figure of our 'system'. Most keepers nowadays can circulate the ball quite well being pressed. As if Donnarumma can't kick a ball.

I want at top shot stopper and Donnarumma is one. Our defenders would have to care for the build-up anyway, no probs.

Its not as simple as just passing it to the next man over, Ederson has an outfield brain. He knows what pass to make and when to make it, he wont play the pass that immediately puts a player under pressure that they then dont have options to get out of, he'll play the pass into the free man, or if there is none, will play it into the space where a player will become free.

People like to attribute the quarterback role to holding midfielders and i get why but Ederson is truly the closest thing to a quarterback in football, he starts all the plays.

No other keeper on the planet has that kind of footballing intelligence, and that's the real difference not simply a much better distribution than everyone else.

He's a master of his game, so much so that the opposition respect that and dont even try to apply a high press because they know with Ederson there it's 11v 10 and puts themselves in a exploitable position.

We've heard other players say they change their gameplan when Ederson is in net because of this. The second he's not in net, it opens up the opportunity for teams to press us high again and force turnovers and we'll see a return of us giving away stupid goals more frequently than we currently do.

Ederson is integral to our entire game and im not sure how you're not seeing that after this many years. I can only assume some have become so used to it they no longer appreciate how unique he is. We'll all see it when he's gone.

Also in a far less competitive league. Half the teams in Ligue 1 can barely keep afloat.

I’m by no means saying he’s a bad keeper, but he’s not a big upgrade on Ederson, he’s far worse on the ball and it’s not fair on Trafford or Ortega.

Plus we’ve got Stones, Akanji, Ake, Kovacic, Gundogan, Grealish & Phillips all either 30+ or we’re looking to replace. Not sure why we’d spend big on a keeper when it’s not a pressing issue.
Going by those isolated stats there’s nothing between them.

I prefer the eye test though mate.

How interesting. There’s not many who share my view but I’ve found one!

He’s not coming to a wet and cold Manchester to be No2 and to sit on the bench to that part of Greater Manchester.

This guy has won a Euros and just come off a treble winning season. If Eddie is going then I'd want Viana sacked if he opted against signing him just because it's tight on James Trafford.

We need the absolute best available in all positions if we're intent on winning this title back.

In terms of his quality with the ball at his feet, again he's just come off a treble winning season in an Enrique managed team. I'm sure it worked for Enrique then it can work for Pep.

Imagine that you had just lied to another new signing by saying 1 more season under Eddie and you'll be the new #1 only to then sign a keeper that is 26yo with a good 10 year life span left in him.

He's a great keeper btw but it should have been one or the other, again, just my humble opinion.
I support City not Trafford..

We'd be crazy not too. One of the best keepers in the world and if Ederson wants to leave we should try and bring this forward assuming he is really available. He would seem to be if PSG have bought a new keeper and dropped him from the Super Cup.

Agreed mate. Just not used to seeing us being so opportunist in the market.

Not for me. Great shot stopper but useless with his feet. Not liking the recent links to him and Roders from Madrid. They do not suit us imo

Thank God someone else had this view! We will have to change our hole game plans when he leaves. Yeh granted he’s not in the top 10 shot stoppers in the world, but I don’t get why people can’t see beyond that. He’s the most important player in the team when it comes to how pep wants to build up play. And to have to make such a massive change in tactics 4 or 5 days before the season starts just doesn’t sound like a Pep/current city thing to do

The vast majority of PL goalkeepers know how to do that nowadays and do it brilliantly.

I coach at a very high level in girls football and we coach every goalkeeper to do it, from the U7s to the age I work with (U16s). Those who can’t grasp / deliver it don’t get picked up as they enter open age football.

The level of repetition, practice and learning that goes into it is huge. We often spend whole 2 hour sessions on that alone.

It’s that integral to the role nowadays. You’re making out Ederson is some unique goalkeeper. He isn’t. They’re all doing it.

We’ll play the same way whether it’s him, Trafford, Ortega, Donnarumma or you in net.

If Donnaruma came he would probly only stay for 4 years and then be off to Madrid whereas Trafford could be our no.1 for the next 10+ seasons.

Trafford would’ve been in a battle for the No1 spot so this changes fuck all for him he’ll just have to be a big boy and crack the fuck on.
How would this not change Traffords situation?

Ederson has a year left on his contract and there is a clear pathway to first team football. If we bring in a 50m keeper on huge wages there’s not a chance Trafford will be starting. It doesn’t matter how how well he trains or plays in cup matches.
