Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

So you want to stick with Ederson who off next summer anyway and at the moment any shot on target is a goal

Ederson is a far better fit for us. Think we’d be worse with Donnarumma a d it’s a huge outlay for season after season. Another concern would be how weak he is on his line and why on earth PSG are so keen to shift him on.

Tell me, how did PSG play last season with a guy with apparently zero ability to kick a ball in net?
Same way we got through cup games with our second choice keeper over the years. Rest of the team is so much better than the rest that you don't drop off enough for it to matter.

You can manage that in knockout cup competitions but doing that every 3 days in a highly competitive league, and a league where we are no longer even the best team in it, that's going to cause issues.

I was initially surprised by the links, but I now think this one will happen. Runours of Galatasaray's interest in Ederson won't go away, and City won't want to lose him for free next season, when they could get (presumably) a decent fee for him now. Added to that Donnarumma being available, and at a reasonable fee, which would be an incredible bit of business.

United now denying they were in for Donnarumma is also quite telling. They don't want a 'snubbed' narrative from taking hold, even though they're desperate to sign him.

Crazy that a lot of people here would not want the club to sign one of the best keepers on the planet.
Not really when you consider his strengths and weaknesses don’t mesh well with city’s.

He just isn’t a great fit at city and we wouldn’t get the best out of each other imo

There is no doubting he is a brilliant shot stopper but his ability to command his box, play as a sweeper and play out effectively are genuine causes for concern. You can’t just dismiss the fact that a manager with similar ideas to pep is happy to bin him off

It’s not just a case of signing the best players they have to fit in the system. Just look at Real Madrid.

Incredibly good keeper and still only 26, got almost a decade in him still, the obvious issue is he isnt that good with his feet which seems fundamental to how we and most top teams play nowadays, which I believe is part of the reason PSG are willing to let him go (among other reasons) despite his saves probably winning them the CL.

If we got him I would be quite excited to have one of the best shot stoppers in the world even if it means we might have to change tactics a bit, if we dont get him we have Trafford coming in who is a huge prospect and more in line with a "Pep" keeper, either way happy.

I hope Pep is actually making decisions on transfers so he isnt landed with a player he doesnt want. Probably more interested in whatever we end up doing with wingers.

Applying the converse logic why are Champions League winners letting him go if he is that good?

For the past two years, PSG has adopted a new strategy: strengthening the squad with French talent like Bayern Munich in Germany, lowering salaries, and getting rid of the big stars who made Qatar famous at the 2024 World Cup (Neymar, Messi, Mbappé, etc.).

Donnarumma's contract extension has been on the table for over six months, with a salary reduction (€7 million fixed + €3 million monthly bonuses), an offer Donnarumma has consistently refused.

Last December, PSG contacted Lille goalkeeper Chevalier and reached an agreement with him. Lucas Chevalier is a player Luis Campos values. And for good reason: the Portuguese signed his first professional contract with him when he was at LOSC, and he knew him well in the youth team.

He's nothing like Ederson when it comes to kicking, but he's slightly better than Donnarumma, and he fits perfectly with PSG's new policy of favoring French players over foreigners.

PSG, 24th in the Champions League and on the verge of elimination, had no idea it would win the Champions League with Donnarumma as a key player.

The decision to part ways with the Italian was made in December/January at the Parisian club's offices; there was no turning back.

I'd love to know James Trafford's thoughts on this. Assuming Ederson may leave next summer (if not before!), will Donnarumma be happy to play second fiddle to a youngster, who I presume signed for us with hopes of being first choice keeper.
