Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

Hard to say because Ederson definitely had daft moments last year, but the team was a mess at times so he had no more daft moments than the defence, mid or attack imo.

I also think his head was scrambled as he wanted out, had a deal agreed with Saudi but we wouldnt accept the fee? Only my opinion but i think we promised him he could leave this summer but the Saudi offer didnt come in and at the WCC he got a load of shit on social media as did his mrs and he decided he just wanted out and the Turkish clubs have come in.

Okay, one last time because I've outlined this plenty of times but none of you want to hear it.

PSG are far better at winning second balls than us. They have a better, more youthful and energetic midfield, their front line press is incredible and their full backs are proficient in possession as well as (shock horror) being capable defensively.

They are in so much of a better position than us to play with a keeper who is shite in possession. They also vary their play more than us and are more than comfortable to let the opposition have the ball. This is why they have their signature rugby-style kickoff.

We are not them and they are not us.

Them winning the Champions League is not proof of Donnarumma's ability with the ball at his feet.

You can debate the importance of that attribute but the bottom line is that it has been a fundamental part of us going on the best run in Premier League run in history, as well as winning the treble.

On top of that, PSG have just looked for and found a keeper who is drastically better in that regard. I'd suggest that if it wasn't important then they'd have paid Donnarumma what he's asking for and kept him.
He’s a much better keeper than Ederson as you’ll come to see when we, hopefully, sign him.

You’re making a huge assumption here that Eddie wants to stay at City, and would therefore just sign a contract if we offered it to him.

He clearly wanted out last summer, and hasn’t looked the same since then.

There’s nothing to suggest he’s changed his mind on wanting out - and that’s fair enough. He’s won the lot at City.

The Club will know his position on a new contract offer, so the fact we haven’t even tried to put one to him would tend to suggest it’s a non-starter.

The options as it stands are: keep Eddie for this season, and let him leave for nothing next summer; or sell him now, and get his replacement in.

I’m not 100% sold on Donnarumma, but if we know Eddie is leaving in a year’s time - and we’ve decided this is the keeper we want - this is the far better option in terms of squad planning.

I think he just wanted a pay rise and a better deal, there is nothing wrong with rewarding Ederson with a better deal.
100% wants what is best for him and his family and i think he deserves a better deal at City

Ederson is not to blame for a poor season plus the so-called move that fell through leaving him unhappy is not right
All he wants is to protect his family and get a fair pay rise

From a PSG supporting French football expert - I think the ideal scenario is Ederson sees out his final year.
There are a lot of reports framing him as a player absolutely not fit for our system, so it is very strange that Pep and Hugo would be pursuing this deal
Julien Laurens is a PSG and Arsenal supporter. He's been very critical of Pep and Manchester City since Haaland's decision to "stay humble" for Arteta. I listen to him every Monday on RMC French radio on the show "Charlie's Angels" from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

He knows nothing, he has no information, and seeing a rival like City strengthen is his last wish, as much as any Arsenal supporter would have!

In the “entertainers” year they conceded just 37 and scored fewer than any PL champions have ever scored. It’s a myth they had lots of high scoring games because of one match against Liverpool that most people remember.
Bloody hell, shows what perception can do. I would have never thought that on the goals scored front! Will always remember the 3-3 that year against us at Maine Road. They were class to watch and we had Kinkladze dribbling half their team at times.

Ederson is a far better fit for us. Think we’d be worse with Donnarumma a d it’s a huge outlay for season after season. Another concern would be how weak he is on his line and why on earth PSG are so keen to shift him on.
Far better fit to a style that’s been found out by a lot inferior teams so I reckon our system will change if it doesn’t we are in for another long season

Same way we got through cup games with our second choice keeper over the years. Rest of the team is so much better than the rest that you don't drop off enough for it to matter.

You can manage that in knockout cup competitions but doing that every 3 days in a highly competitive league, and a league where we are no longer even the best team in it, that's going to cause issues.
Fuck me, this place is clueless at times.

Crazy that a lot of people here would not want the club to sign one of the best keepers on the planet.
Particularly when there's so many complaints about the cheap goals we concede, or the 1 shot, 1 goal stuff. Imagine if we had a keeper who could save more than the bare minimum lol.

He’s a much better keeper than Ederson as you’ll come to see when we, hopefully, sign him.

He certainly is a lot better at the more traditional aspects of goalkeeping and he could go in to enjoy success here.

But I still have reservations, partially for the reasons outlined but also the wider implications, such as our wage bill and our potential lack of ability to prioritise more pressing issues in the squad.

I also think his head was scrambled as he wanted out, had a deal agreed with Saudi but we wouldnt accept the fee? Transfers scramble my head. Imagine if you were the player at the centre of it all.

I'd love to know James Trafford's thoughts on this. Assuming Ederson may leave next summer (if not before!), will Donnarumma be happy to play second fiddle to a youngster, who I presume signed for us with hopes of being first choice keeper.
Trafford is 22. How many keepers do you know of that age who are the 1st choice keepers at PL clubs? I don't know. I'd be surprised if there any. My point is that very soon, City are going to buy another keeper. We have to because Ederson and Ortega are leaving. Who can say who will be first choice then? This is part and parcel of football.

I don't think we should base our transfer strategy on the expectations of players personal development.

For the past two years, PSG has adopted a new strategy: strengthening the squad with French talent like Bayern Munich in Germany, lowering salaries, and getting rid of the big stars who made Qatar famous at the 2024 World Cup (Neymar, Messi, Mbappé, etc.).

Donnarumma's contract extension has been on the table for over six months, with a salary reduction (€7 million fixed + €3 million monthly bonuses), an offer Donnarumma has consistently refused.

Last December, PSG contacted Lille goalkeeper Chevalier and reached an agreement with him. Lucas Chevalier is a player Luis Campos values. And for good reason: the Portuguese signed his first professional contract with him when he was at LOSC, and he knew him well in the youth team.

He's nothing like Ederson when it comes to kicking, but he's slightly better than Donnarumma, and he fits perfectly with PSG's new policy of favoring French players over foreigners.

PSG, 24th in the Champions League and on the verge of elimination, had no idea it would win the Champions League with Donnarumma as a key player.

The decision to part ways with the Italian was made in December/January at the Parisian club's offices; there was no turning back.

This post should probably be pinned.
