Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

Yes but Enrique wants him out because of his kicking.

Just a concern for us given how Pep has set us up previously.

The idea of this is really nonsensical. They desperately tried to get him to agree a new deal, they just weren’t offering the same as his old contract because they’ve moved away from their era of wreckless spending. If he’d signed the renewal they wouldn’t have bought a new no.1 and neither Enrique or anyone else would be talking about a new style. What they’re doing now is forcing him out because of optics, they don’t want another mbappe situation, a superstar leaving for free.

Enrique at PSG has let him go because he can't do this very well.
Tell you that did he? Or is that what his pay masters have told him to parrot in the media?

Didn’t have any issues with him dragging PSG to a CL last year from what I remember.

That said, if he does make a mistake or most likely Dias and Akanji fumble a pass, at least we have a chance he will save the chance that’s created from it. At the minute if Ederson did a rabona pass to Dias and fucked it up we already know it’s going in.

He’s on big wages, into the last 12mths and they had a market opportunity to secure Chevalier for the next decade. It’s business.

Mbappe wanted out.

Donnarumma by all accounts didn't want to leave. I doubt the 'best goalkeeper' in the world has been kicked out because of contract issues. They would have come to a compromise.

He's gone because Enrique want's a keeper who his good with his feet. That's it.

I`m quite ready for a guy a bit worse with his feet but that makes way more saves and can actually save penalties personally. Ederson has been an AMAZING signing but his head just isnt he anymore and the time to go is now and if we can get Donnarumma at a great price and he`s instantly available the get it done please Hugo.
This for me. Eddie hasn't even been great with his passing last two seasons and for me he's always too slow to release the ball ( yet ironically gets booked for time wasting when no other keepers do). He takes a banging penalty, but to my reckoning has saved 4 for us ( don't count shootouts) in 8 years. I had a discussion with my friends then 21 year nephew at the beginning of 2022 and neither of us were enamoured of his shot stopping ability then.

So he had a blinder in the CL final, which was great, but how many times have we seen the same opposition goalies regularly have worldy games v us? I would never put Eddie in that category.

I like the bloke, he's a character but we need a reliable penalty saving, one on one and regular shot stopper. Which for me and MP ( mates nephew) Eddie is not.

No. But he told the press.

If you want to believe he just parrots his paymasters then so be it.

He isn't a bit worse though, Trafford is a bit worse, Donnarumma is a lot worse, and the supposed weakness in the air bothers me a bit.I'm happy to see what happens and not sure it will ,do find it quite hard to get my head round though.

It isn't a case of can we play differently , we change all the time, the question is ,is Pep going to go against one of his most fundemental beliefs that possesion and not giving the ball away is how he wants to play. Not impossible but unlikely, so then the question is IF we are interested in Donnarumma does Pep think he can get him playing his way. Only Pep can answer any of that and that' s okay. What do this is almost certain is whoever the keeper that we won't turn into some counter attacking team we will still be a technical possesion based team, and the players we've bought fit that .
Thats the key point, Peos core belief is possesion of the football, thats why Joe Hart was let go, he isn't changing that, he tweaks systems and of course personnel change but at the core of everything is keeping hold of the ball, i think Donnarumma is a superb keeper and maybe we do sign him but we'll have to see, personaly i think it's his agent flying a kite putring our name in the mix. Will be interesting to say the least esoecially if Ederson goes.

If last night is anything to go by , he needs to concentrate on being a bit better with his hands and worry less about his feet.

Haaland isn't a Pep player and doesn't suit the way we play either. Yet he is on a 10 year contract!
He is the end of every situation not the start. Pressing a goalkeeper is different than pressing a striker especially when there‘s not many good strikers out there

The keeper doesn't need to be competent with the ball at his feet to be a possession based team though.

He needs to be capable of receiving a pass and moving it to another defender. If we have to drop one more player back as a way of beating the press then I can't see that being that much of an obstacle. You just play through another defender or midfielder rather than the false sweeper that Ederson plays.

Supposed weakness from Julien Laurens you mean? I watched the champions league matches last season and Donnarumma was imo the main reason they won it! His performance against Arsenal alone was ridiculous! The whole reliance on this keeper happy to let attackers press him and then pass around at the back is redundant now imo as teams have worked out just to not press us in that way and then it means we dont have the space to attack quickly hence we started going longer quicker last season? Every keeper has ability with their feet these days but Ederson is a freak and shouldnt really be the bench mark for every goalkeeper?

Weakness in the air is an even bigger concern for me, we concede tonnes of crosses currently. Always thought that was a relatively underrated aspect of Ederson’s game.

Funny how Enrique didn’t have any issues with him in the two years he’s been there, but suddenly it’s an issue when the lads contract comes up for renewal. Maybe PSG just couldn’t afford anyone else.

Clearly didn’t feel as strong as Pep did about a “ball playing keeper”. Pep had Hart out the door after the first training session.

Maybe, but the point remains that Enrique wanted Donnarumma to leave because of his kicking.
