Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

I think we all accept Ederson is going. My point, which I thought was clear so sorry for the confusion, is that haggling over a couple of quid isn’t worth losing Donnarumma over. Particularly as Eddie will be gone in 10 months anyway.

We don't know how much we are haggling over. Doubt it is a couple quid though.

People moan when we accept lower than average fees for our players, people moan when we stand firm and wait for clubs to pay up.

Donnarumma will have given the club enough to feel confident about. I back them to wait.

IF eddy leaves isn't there a chance ortega stays as no 2? I'm sure trafford will have been told he's seen as future no 1 that future will look 6 years down the line if Donna comes in.

Donnarumma is world class and makes several world class saver each season, many of them in big games.

I'm all for us signing him but I fear he may be troublesome if/when Trafford ousts him as our main keeper. I'm all for having strong cover in each position but unlike outfield players keepers don't take kindly to losing their place. As long as Pep tells him he is our first choice keeper this season but not guaranteed to start I'm happy. Nothing worse than a player coming into the squad and upsetting the harmony amongst the players.

I'm sure there is, yeah. Imo too much noise around the Donnarumma transfer though for it not to be something there in it.

Not the sort of decision you can allow to run down to the wire. Movement in whatever direction it is will happen this week most likely. The starting point is Eddy and will he move? If he does we have a decision to make assuming Donnarumma is available and willing. 11

Neville has already started the campaign for the rags to get a new keeper.
Wouldn't be surprised if the media tag them with Donnarumma in the next few days.
If they don't then maybe they know he's already been snapped up by someone

Tbf apart from the big pay day would he go to the rags no European football and no guarantee of it next season etc. Too good to not be playing in Europe.

They've not had much champions league football for a while really (apart from coming bottom of their group 2 yrs ago) but they still manage to spend 200 -300M every summer somehow on players regardless of their European position

Are you confident that Trafford would handle Arsenal's setpieces? I am pleased we have signed Trafford but I think it is better that he develops alongside an experienced gk.
I'm confident he handles them better than Donna. He barely moves off his line and is weak in the air.

Not signed any top draw players at their peak tho which he is.

Their latest rag recruit is already on it

I always try to just defer judgement on transfers until they've been here a year and assume Pep and co. know best but this transfer feels so left field.

We clearly invested in Trafford as a future no.1. GK is not like any other position, he can't get good enough to take over just by playing cup games. Bringing him in with Ederson or Ortega around for a year or 2 to take pressure off made tons of sense, bringing in Donnarumma completely upends that plan which was seemingly made a few months ago.

That's before you even take into account the fact Donnarumma will not accept missing CL games, he's a massive drama queen, and despite being an exceptional shot-stopper, he's not particularly good with his feet (Hence why Luis Enrique wants rid) and he's not the best in the air either despite being massive.

It looks like we're changing plans on the fly and setting ourselves up for drama, because Trafford would be well within his rights to ask to leave if he was brought in to be #1 (the club's plans for GK would surely have been part of the discussions when he was signed) and ends up behind a 26 year old mega-signing on 300k/week.

Consider also the prospect that Trafford and Donnarumma compete on a level playing field and Trafford is better - not impossible given his better footwork, familiarity with English football and obvious potential - then we're stuck with an unsellable backup keeper on huge wages who's causing drama because he's not in the team.

Unless Viana explained everything before Trafford signed?

Yeah and that's an unknowable for us fans right now, but given Trafford had the choice between 2 CL clubs in City and Newcastle (where he'd be starting ahead of 33 year old Pope who isn't the player he used to be) and he wants to be England #1 with a world cup next year it's very hard to imagine he'd have signed up to being a backup for the forseeable future (5+ years).

It also doesn't fit in with what we're hearing about the club being open to keeping Ederson.
