Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

How do you stop opposition playing that ball down the line when we have a high line on the half way line if we don’t press get tight on every player? Because once there is a free man to play that ball to players who are faster than all our back line we will be in trouble multiple times in a game!? We play someone who is fast at the back we have a chance other wise we will see the same to top teams who work press as well as spurs did! Frank plays man marking without the ball and when there player receives the ball our about to they are on him in an instant! Have to say though don’t think we will see a team press us like that at home again! Spurs under Frank now look like a Brentford team on crack!
I've been saying for years that Franks would do an effective job at a bigger club, or one with better players than he had at Brentford, and I was only surprised that a club like Everton hadn't moved for him, he would have probably have kicked some backsides there and sorted them out ..... he's a likeable guy, and he really knows his stuff, a good manager, and Tottenham have made a smart move in bringing him to their club.

Pep did many things fans wanted: Trafford over Ederson, no uncs in midfield with Gonzales and Cherki starting instead of Gundo and Bernardo, Marmoush over Doku, and so on.

Youngest City line-up in the PL since 2010!

Performance wasn't good enough for some objective reasons.

Spurs started their pre-season 2-3 weeks earlier and are fitter, better prepared than us.

We have many new players: they need time to gel.

The uncs weren't as bad as it was often assumed: the main reason for our problems last season were the many injuries, not Gundo's, Bernardo's or Kevin's legs. All of those 3 can run more than Cherki, and maybe Gonzalez as well. Cherki and Gonzalez will need time to reach the required fitness levels.

Also, we could do without the mistakes for their goals.

Rebuilding takes time. Might be another transition season. I expected a slow start and significant improvement come November and December. We are likely to be much better in 2-3 months.

Possible mistakes by Pep/the club: going into the season with 2 injury prone CBs, both on the wrong side of 30, and relying on Rico to start games at RB.

Rebuilding means inconsistency is inevitable. Let's hope Rodri stays fit, he can make us more consistent and hard to beat.

we are a work in progress
I think the players just need to get used to each other
Once they do we will be a great team

What is the work in progress about this team? With RAN out we have 3 new players, of which we are likely only starting with 1-2. This team had more than 6 months to progress and has regressed.

Try that one next week in the match thread……

We just aren't 'gelling' that much at the moment, and the win at Wolves was probably down to their defensive frailties as much as it was about our fluency, but, as we've got several newcomers in our team, that's probably understandable ...... yesterday our fluency, movement and penetration was basically non existent, and especially after the promising opening period of the match, when we did at least threaten.

We have bought high quality, IMO.
Cherki - one of the most extreme young talents in world football
Reijnders - Serie A midfielder of the year and Dutch international
Ait-Nouri - PL experienced, highly talented left-back
Marmoush - Bundesliga stat leading forward
Trafford - Players player of the season (Championship)

We can add other players into that mix, but they have played a couple of games together and it will take time. The PL is an unforgiving league and we faced a well-schooled, disciplined outfit, still creating enough chances to win, but conceding from two errors: a slip and a misplaced pass.

Like most, I was excited by yesterday's team selection and we did play some good stuff early on. I was disappointed that we seemed lethargic in terms of our attempt to get back into it. I would have liked to see more urgency from the bench, and more push from those on the pitch - it was a little too easy for Spurs to see it out, IMO.

I recall @ninjamonkey saying this:
Very surprised they havent gone with a back 5. That's a tough midfield though, Nico will have to be on it and Reijnders will have considerably more defensive responsibilities than Wolves.

He was right, really, and the problem was in central midfield.

EDIT: just seen the post from @alexmcity - bang on. None of the older players, no failing legs, a very young team, and a line-up almost wholly supported here.

One other thing City.

Please cut out the razzmatazz /fireworks pre kick off. We’ve come to watch a football match ffs

Least of our problems I know but that along with the 100 people on the pitch/touchline before the whistle goes is embarrassing
I guess they want to appeal to the kids more than the adults, aimed at a family orientated day out . All very Americanised though -just like everything else these days .It doesnt bother me though but it happens at virtually every big club now so we will just have to get used to it

Take a look at these highlights – the first three shots, before there was even any real threat to our goal from their side, all came from Marmoush. Out of those three efforts, we easily could’ve scored twice... it’s honestly heartbreaking.

In games like this, it really does come down to fine margins. If we’d just put one of those chances away, it’s a completely different story.

Besides what was a collectively disastrous performance yesterday, and Lewis having a nightmare, I actually think the biggest culprit in the loss was Marmoush — as strange as that might sound. He had three clear chances where he simply had to deliver something

Right after him, it has to be Haaland – that header miss was absolutely dreadful.

The trouble is those players found it difficult to get in to the match yesterday, let alone have any real impact on it ..... Reinjders was in a good position, and had a great chance to shoot on goal, yet he inexplicably and wrongly opted to try and play an aimless ball to somebody else who got nowhere it ..... Cherki was pretty inneffective, aside from one decent cross, as Tottenham increasingly stifled his play, and then he was withdrawn ...... and the injury ended Ait Nouris game ..... Marmoush should have lifted the ball over their keeper, when through on goal, but didn't even attempt to.

I agree with some of that, sure, but every one of those players would have been in the starting lineup of most posters. I don't think Cherki was ineffective either, laying on an excellent chance for Haaland; a wonderful long pass out to Marmoush who miscontrolled it - he would have been through; a super defence-splitter resulting in a great save by Vicario (should have been lifted as you say).
As you say, it is a game of fine margins. If we take one of those chances then the game looks very different. It will take a little time for all those to gel fully.

Spot on ..... you have to take your chances ... and especially early doors, when a two or three goal lead could deflate the opposition into basically 'calling it a day' early, and just playing for match limitation .... instead we missed early chances and Tottenham just dug in, grew in belief, you could just feel a goal coming.

I didn’t see Lewis have a nightmare. I saw Lewis trying to make up for where others fell short. Much rather have Lewis at RB than Nunes.

Let's be honest here: We were outclassed.
I 8 Spurs, but they were quicker to every ball with sharp and incisive passing and a press that choked us to death.
We were slow and ponderous in attack by comparison and looked tired.
Worse, we had a way out with Haaland (often only with one defender on him on the half way line), but never took the option.

Thanks EB;)
Even EB was slow off the mark with his trademark slogan today.

2 major problems imo yesterday was the speed of the defence and the physicality compared to spurs

When RAN went off injured, although Ake is a really good player it made us even slower. We need to get Khusanov in the defence, let’s see if he can play full back for a start

It will improve once Rodri comes back as he is not likely to lose the ball under pressure. The new boys Cherki and Nico struggled with the Spurs press

Lastly they need the right studs because it seemed Spurs players had no problem but ours were slipping all over the place, including Stones for the first goal

Lewis went to sleep really for the first. The Spurs winger was a good few yards behind him when Stones slipped yet got there well ahead of Lewis (who also went with the wrong foot IMO). He needs to be more aware of where his man is.

Apart from Porro.. and that’s debatable.. there isn’t 1 player in spurs starting 11 that would get in our starting 11

Yet they looked so much better as a team

Not sure what to take from that
What surprised me was how much fitter, faster and stronger Spurs were than our 11, it was a real eye opener as I thought we looked fit and strong last week against Wolves! Different gravy.

My brother watching at home kept highlighting this to us in the stadium, how on earth were we not correctly prepared for our own stadium?
