@ancoats what’s the obsession with Trafford mate?

Trafford is great. Going to be amazing in the future but don’t think he’s a title winning keeper just yet. I’m sure he’ll still play a lot this season tho. But We’re signing arguably the best keeper in the world, captain for Italy, just won champions league, an absolute leader a 6ft 5 beast and he’s only 26. Not enough dancing gifs
that nails it mate

Quite the change in keeper profile from Eddie and Ortega to Trafford and Donnaruma

Do we expect Pep to tell them to try and play the same way or switch it up and be a bit more direct?

Gonna be interesting
It looks like they are already being more direct.

I think we were somewhat fortunate with Donnarumma because it was a shock when he broke with PSG but credit to City in moving for him. Donnarumma is a huge presence in goal and I think he will lift our level.

He wont fix all our problems but we have made progress from the team that finished 3rd last season. Donnarumma is one of the best players in the world and Reijnders is a top class player.

Some bitter French journalist posting a statement full of sour grapes whilst working for anti city sky sports isn’t worth jack shit.

Cheers.

Laurens has always hated City, and he's a big PSG fan. He's trashed us and Pep for years because he sees us as a rival project to their Qatar owners. One of the joys of my football supporting life is that the City model got us to the CL before PSG, and they finally conceded and copied City's approach to get where they are.

its all a bit strange, eddy suits the style of play we are used to, Trafford and Donna don't, are we going to change things to say a 442 with the moush next to Haaland with a more direct aproach instead of playing from the back

Eddy was going to go next summer if not this, no one else around can play like him so we would have to change how we play out of the back regardless.

I`m going to be controversial on this but unfortunately ive fallen off the wagon so dont care but some of the older posters are just desperate for an academy 11? Me personally, i couldnt get a flying shite about it as long as City are successful? The academy at the end of the day is a business machine as pretty much all of the younger talents coming through just arent good enough to make that world class level and we sell them on for good money to go and still have a career in football? Foden currently i think peaked and won so much so young that its kinda stunted him going forward as he has the dream life, won EVERYTHING already and a dad of 4 kids at 24 from a back street Stockport upbringing?

100% this. A very un-City like signing at least based on the last couple of years but good to see we're not just set on buying 18-23 year-olds who might be good enough one day.

When the rest of the league was still playing brexit hoofball Pep came in with the high line and sweeper keeper.

Now everyone else is doing it, it does make sense for us to do something radically different again.

Remains to be seen whether it works or not but there is logic to it.

From Sky Sports Website:

'Donnarumma 100 per cent not the right GK for City'

French football expert Julien Laurens speaking on the Transfer Talk Podcast:

"Is he the right fit for Manchester City? The answer is: 100 per cent, he isn't.

"On saves - him and Thibaut Courtois, there are no goalkeepers better. Maybe that is enough for Guardiola to say he wants him.

"But to play for Guardiola you have to be good with your feet. If you're not good with the ball at your feet, you are not a Guardiola goalkeeper.

"His distribution is not good enough for a Guardiola team. And his other weakness is he does not come for the ball in the air, he doesn't like coming for crosses and corners.

"If there is one league in the world where you have to be brave like that, it's the Premier League. I cannot see how Guardiola thinks 'this is the perfect guy for me'."

Maybe we are planning for the manager after Pep? I really don't think he is going to stay beyond this season.
Whatever, see you in two weeks.

I dont know how you have come to that conclusion, i said nothing of the sort. I also very strongly disagree with the suggestion Ederson has always struggled with crosses. He's very dominant in the air.

Psg didnt just sign a new keeper after he rejected a contract extension, they've been tracking him for ages. PSG coping with donnarumma's lack of ability on the ball is only relevant if we can replicate that same level. Nobody who has watched us for the last 18 months would ever think we can produce the displays psg did with this squad. if that's the level you need to produce to compensate for a keeper who can't get involved then we are fucked.

Ederson is shite on crosses mate always has been. Flaps and misses most of the time.

And what if Ederson wants to leave? What then? Stick with Trafford or sign one of the top 3 keepers in the world?
Ortega as back up. I flash back to when we had Given, Hart and Kasper, all no 1 goalies in thier own right and it was bs that only one could play. It's more of an issue with the treatment of trafford than the actual signing. If we got donuruma instead of trafford I'd be happy as well..

I’d be inclined to believe Trafford knew this was happening.

The narrative seems to be that we don’t need to sign one of the best keepers in the world because we have this young lad and yet there is zero evidence that Trafford can step up to the required level. At the moment, Trafford is the goalkeeper version of Rico Lewis breaking through. It’s potential and that’s all, there’s no guarantees he becomes a top keeper. It’s not that long ago, people had Rico down as our RB for the next decade, now those same people don’t want him at the club at all. The gamble here, would be not signing Donnarumma and it turns out Trafford isn’t actually the 2nd coming of Gordon Banks. What do we do then?

If what you and some others say is true, Donnarumma will be an expensive mistake and Trafford will come through and save the day. If what you say is wrong, then Donnarumma will turn out to be a great number 1 and nobody will give a toss about Trafford, because the club is more important than any one player. Either way, you have nothing to worry about with this signing.
I don't know what site you've been on but nobody has rated Rico as a full-back. Let me a pose a question to you. Do you think we would have won the game with D in goal yesterday? It would help if some commentators fact checked occasionally. For the last 2 seasons Martinez has been voted the World No1. Would you be happier if we had signed him?

but will he change it, we have two keepers now that don't suit or current play style and struggle to play the ball around the box, Trafford in for the spurs game and the play style stayed the same 'despite knowing his limits' and of course the result was we conceded with that weakness, i'd seriously go back to basics against united with a 442, Haaland and the moush together as striker partners and drop the play at the back

We have just signed one of the best keepers in the world and a huge improvement over current Eddie. We will need to slightly adjust our play in that the defenders will not be able to rely on Ederson’s ball control at his feet but so be it. Give the GK options when short passing from the back and don’t put him under undue pressure with pass backs
