Thoughts on the start to the season? | October thoughts (p12)

We have dropped more points than we have won and is currently placed 9th, behind Sunderland and on the same points as Leeds, 8 points behind Liverpool after just 5 games. We dont need to pretend this start to the season has been anything but poor.

Comparing to last season feels pointless since its not exactly a good benchmark to judge if we are successful or not.
You don’t get it do you? We played well today. Our third tough game in a week. Do you attend matches?

We need at least 6 games...and we haven't got KDB and Walker plus we've a few young bloods that need settling in. To coin a phrase from our rather pathetic neighbours, we're in transition, hopefully for a season and not 10.
At least we're not turning corners...

I thought the thread was how good our start to the season has been, not how well we played in the last week? Do you think its a good start to lose as many games as you win?

Brighton’s come back didn’t bode well and I thought if we could hang on today it would have been a great start to the season, but I feel like we have seen some very good highs and are starting to put the lows behind us.

A 93rd minute goal will hurt the players, and hopefully Donnarumma will realize he can’t just hang out in the PL, it’s come or stay, but it is almost impossible to fault the effort and some of the football we have seen so far, as the team begins to gel over the early part of the season.

As even Pep noted, we are well ahead of where we were last season in these same fixtures, yet we are still developing on field relationships, which means we could have a very interesting season.

The Peps have added a few NEW strings to our bow and seeing today’s goal made me so excited to see us starting to utilize Erling like Erling likes to be utilized!

The Future is Blue!!

We should never have lost at Brighton. We dominated that game and threw it away. Other than that, we’ve largely gotten what we deserved from the games. We are nowhere near our levels of previous years and I don’t see us as title challengers. Liverpool will win it at a canter. We’ve done ok for a team that’s likely playing for a top 4 spot.

Comparing to last season shows the fixture schedule was a difficult start.

That is more ideal than comparing to teams who have easier starts.

Comparatively, if we'd had Liverpool's fixtures, we got 9 points from those teams and went unbeaten, that would have been an easier start to this season.

It is a good comparison because we started a rebuild last season. One which we are continuing this season

So I assume you don’t attend games. It’s not too late to become a Chelsea fan.

We’ve looked a lot better since the international break and you can see that our style is changing

I also think that it’s going to take time and can’t see us being in the shake up for the title

If we want to compare to previous seasons, I think it would make more sense to compare to successful ones rather than the worst one in over a decade. Being better than awful means little to nothing. If we are doing well in comparison to other successful City teams, it says a bit more about our chances to achieve something good this season.

Just my opinion of course :)

We still don’t look up to the fitness of all the other teams yet, and it’s late September. Everyone we’ve played has looked looked in better shape than us, especially at the end of each half.

Of the five goals we’ve conceded this season, three of them have been timed at: 45+2mins, 89mins and 90+3mins. As well as not looking physically sharp for full halves/games yet, we haven’t looked mentally sharp late in halves/games and conceded goals where numerous players have made poor choices.

We have looked uncomfortable in possession as well this season. I think that’s the first time we’ve had two PL games in a row with less possession than our opponents since 2009-10. We used to have a squad full of players who relished having the ball at their feet and could move it at pace around the pitch, exactly how Pep wants his teams to play football. However, we’ve lost a couple of players every year whose game was all about keeping the ball and replaced them with players who are nowhere near as good/tidy. The general trend down is starting to be seen in how we keep the ball now.

We do seem to have more pace in the team now compared to the last two seasons. We have a great spine with Donarumma-Gvardiol-Rodri-Foden-Haaland. But we also have a lot of younger players who aren’t in their prime yet and a few with little PL experience yet and then a few players who are coming to the end of their time with us. The newer players need a good six months this season before they’re settled into this team so it’ll be interesting to revisit this in February and see where we are. A concerning one is that players who’ve been here for nearly 10 months still don’t look settled in the team yet.

One big plus is that we are 4 points and 13 goals in GD up on the corresponding fixtures from last season, but we don’t look like a very top side anymore and I don’t think we’re title contenders this season. But neither do Chelsea, Newcastle, Villa, Forest and Brighton who are the teams who finished below us last season so I can still see us getting 3rd and I’ll be more than happy with that.

“Tough start”, wtf ?! PL wise we haven’t had a tough start at all, we’ve played one top team and four mediocre / shite teams. As such 7 points from 15 is piss poor at face value.

Still, with my happy hat on, I prefer to judge it on 3 games with a proper keeper in goal …. 2 wins 1 draw and only one late late goal conceded and two of the games were against sides that are amongst the best in Europe

Last season was a failure. Instead of comparing with failures we should be comparing ourselves with successful editions of City. At least if our aim is to be successful, and not just doing better than failure.

Far more optimistic than after the Brighton result.
Yeah, this.

And as someone else said - heading in the right direction. That result today will have done wonders for us mentally too and made us realise that we have players who can be relied upon.

After Brighton I was shell shocked and it felt we had not I proved of last years soft centre but now the team will feel ready for war.

I can imagine Pep in the changing room giving them a Churchill style peach which will steel then for the rest of the season.

Watching on Sky it also reenforced just how much I hate that smug twat Carragher.

Top 4 challengers, just missing a few top class starting 11 players and some better quality squad depth players to be a title threat this season. Could really use another striker in the squad as no options with 1 of our 2 strikers injured
