ID cards.

Whether they are or not. the country will have digital id and even if Labour lose the next election, I expect they will remain
I disagree, but it will be interesting to see government criminalising people for not having a smartphone.

Perhaps like at European Country level they are from the 12th of October this year collecting their own photos and fingerprints then using the Customs Gateway to bond them to the actual passport shown rather then trying to get them from other country databases.
They now control everything.
Yep. It's called protecting their borders. Oh ,the irony of it all!!

Just saw a story about a hack of Customs data in America.

Going to be fun when national id data (with all it contains) gets compromised.

And that is where we must learn from those countries that have id in for years. 20 years ago it was easy to forge a passport I believe. Not any more as they have biometrics and digital information stored on them. What's the difference?

I thought that the digital part was that the info was saved in a chip. It's still going to be a physical plastic card.

Hence many comments that not carrying one is okay in day-to-day life.

Ive already got one of those, no need for another.

And I never carry physical cards as its just a bit too easy to lose them. And I wouldn't want to waste the government's money making me replacements every few weeks.

If you've got a passport with biometrics and digital information stored on it, why do you need something else?

FFs it won't be a physical "card". It's digital so will be on a device. If you don't carry cards,as I still do, I bet you have a method of payment on your phone, as I don't . Be honest do you have Apple or Google Pay?

Why on earth would they control bank details. For starters the banks won't let them and also the banks profit from your data anyway so they won't want to hand that over. You're extrapolating too much this is just a data merge and photo upgrade that brings the UK into the 2020s

Banks will already be forced to hand over details for welfare recipients soon under the guise of combating fraud.

Don't act like it can't happen to others.
