The Labour Government

After waffling on for 20+ minutes, Reeves' speech amounts to "Tories were bad for 14 years, so don't blame ME when I announce a budget that fucks everybody over."

Even Sky and ITV have had enough covering this self-aggrandizing, blame shifting twaddle.
At least the her make-up team earned some overtime. Probably a 4 am start

1. Brexit has reduced the size of the UK economy.
2. COVID cost the country untold billions. In part to keep much of the population in idleness for 18 months. Another big chunk went to Tory mates for supplying useless kit. And several 'businesses' simply stole money. And we are not talking £50 either.
3. The Ukraine war has severely damaged the whole European economy. In addition, we are paying out huge subsidies to keep Ukraine going.

I think these things together explain most of the problem. And I don't see any magic solutions. Cutting tax is unrealistic, so if you want to cut Tax A, you have to increase Tax B. That's reality.

The fuel tax has been frozen for a long time. Realistically, that needs to end. Sorry, motorists, but while you've enjoyed your freeze, no one froze train fares.

I don't think you can hope to pull all the necessary money from the rich. The honest way is to increase income tax for everyone and have a massive crackdown on tax dodging. I would also introduce Land Value Tax. The landowners can't take their land out of the country. But, first, I'd freeze all rents indefinitely, including agricultural rents.

She's not wrong.

Austerity, supported by the Lib Dems is biting hard.

Lack of social care/policing/cuts to public services affect all of us not insulated by being super rich.

Chuck in Austerity and you have
Austerity
Brexit
C19

It has a ring to it. Stolen from LBC :-)

"Everyone must do their bit"

We have been, Rachel. We've tightened our belts, still gone to work, put up with the energy increases, cost of living, low minimum wage 'increases'. We have done our bit. Our turn is over.

When is it the turn of the multinationals, the shareholders, the billionaires, the millionaire celebrities and entertainers? When are you going to start taking money off them and giving it back to the populace? When is the 'living wage' going to actually match the cost of living?
You did your fucking bit to cause this when you voted for Brexit.

Fuel tax is moving up and down all the time due to the VAT element

I would add to your second paragraph that benefits need to be seriously looked at
It's an area that politicians don't want to go near because it's such an unpopular topic, but there needs to be changes

And before anyone calls me a nasty selfish twat, there is a close relative of mine who has taken very easy street along with his partner and her father all claiming when there is fuck all wrong with any of them and somehow they all claim carers allowance for each other

Didn't someone post on here the other week that there are more people claiming than paying in at the moment!
