The Labour Government

1. Brexit has reduced the size of the UK economy.
2. COVID cost the country untold billions. In part to keep much of the population in idleness for 18 months. Another big chunk went to Tory mates for supplying useless kit. And several 'businesses' simply stole money. And we are not talking £50 either.
3. The Ukraine war has severely damaged the whole European economy. In addition, we are paying out huge subsidies to keep Ukraine going.

I think these things together explain most of the problem. And I don't see any magic solutions. Cutting tax is unrealistic, so if you want to cut Tax A, you have to increase Tax B. That's reality.

The fuel tax has been frozen for a long time. Realistically, that needs to end. Sorry, motorists, but while you've enjoyed your freeze, no one froze train fares.

I don't think you can hope to pull all the necessary money from the rich. The honest way is to increase income tax for everyone and have a massive crackdown on tax dodging. I would also introduce Land Value Tax. The landowners can't take their land out of the country. But, first, I'd freeze all rents indefinitely, including agricultural rents.

After waffling on for 20+ minutes, Reeves' speech amounts to "Tories were bad for 14 years, so don't blame ME when I announce a budget that fucks everybody over."

Even Sky and ITV have had enough covering this self-aggrandizing, blame shifting twaddle.
She's not wrong.

Austerity, supported by the Lib Dems is biting hard.

Lack of social care/policing/cuts to public services affect all of us not insulated by being super rich.

I think you need to wake up and realise it doesn’t matter who is currently in power, this shit show has been coming anyway, and we all know why
It's labour that's in power, no one else. Please enlighten us regarding your last statement.

Chuck in Austerity and you have
Austerity
Brexit
C19

It has a ring to it. Stolen from LBC :-)

"Everyone must do their bit"

We have been, Rachel. We've tightened our belts, still gone to work, put up with the energy increases, cost of living, low minimum wage 'increases'. We have done our bit. Our turn is over.

When is it the turn of the multinationals, the shareholders, the billionaires, the millionaire celebrities and entertainers? When are you going to start taking money off them and giving it back to the populace? When is the 'living wage' going to actually match the cost of living?
You did your fucking bit to cause this when you voted for Brexit.

Fuel tax is moving up and down all the time due to the VAT element

I would add to your second paragraph that benefits need to be seriously looked at
It's an area that politicians don't want to go near because it's such an unpopular topic, but there needs to be changes

And before anyone calls me a nasty selfish twat, there is a close relative of mine who has taken very easy street along with his partner and her father all claiming when there is fuck all wrong with any of them and somehow they all claim carers allowance for each other

Didn't someone post on here the other week that there are more people claiming than paying in at the moment!

Personally I think tax has to go up. The mistake was telling people it won’t.

I just hope that they don’t pussy foot around and do it properly rather than not doing enough and then having to do more next year.

So every time she trots out the line "The last 14 years...", she really means 13 years of Conservative Governments and 1 year of Labour. Just wish she'd be honest with people - the economy is in a total mess and taxes are going up.

The difference is any business owner in the private sector who has a highly inefficient and wasteful operation with a lazy, intransigent and entitled workforce providing an abysmal level of service for thier paying customers is only wasting their own money... money which I suspect will soon run out.

It doesn't quite work like that in terms of the public sector does it, the public sector can be as inefficient, inept, intransigent, workshy and entitled as it likes... yet the money still rolls right in.
And the money "rolls" right back out because the public sector is not there to make a bloody profit.

I was unfortunate a few years ago to lose a kidney and it required a few years of follow up treatment. I was initially treated on BUPA as I had it as a work benefit. In the private sector, whenever I went for the 6 monthly cystoscopy, I would turn up to my private room, eat sandwiches and usually spend a couple of hours waiting for the procedure. I would then be escorted to the theatre where there were usually 4 nurses + the doctor doing the actual procedure which took about 5 minutes.

When I retired, BUPA upped the cover to £700 per month so obviously it had to go. In the NHS, the very same procedure involved turning up, being seen on time, walking into the theatre where there was 1 nurse and the person carrying out the procedure and I was on my way. The whole process less than 20 minutes and significantly more productive than the private hospital who then passed on their extortionate costs to the insurer and ultimately the patient.
