Haaland’s penalties…be careful what you wish for!

There’s nothing wrong with his conversion rate and he is a good penalty taker. It’s just that he has missed some really important ones. If we are playing big opposition in important games, we can’t afford to keep pissing these chances up the wall.

For balance, he has scored some big pens too, they don’t come much bigger than Spurs away, in injury time, when you’re trying to win a PL.

As for giving someone else a go…no thanks, I want the deadliest striker in the world to take our pens.
Well argued.esp the Spurs away point.

Tactical Notes

• Guardiola has rotated penalty takers frequently, often based on form and confidence.
• Misses have come in high-stakes matches, including Champions League knockouts and Community Shield shootouts.
• Despite the occasional miss, City’s overall penalty record remains solid compared to league
The stats are completely made up.

Ilkay missed against Liverpool, Spurs and Leeds.

Sterling missed against Wolves, twice the same pen, Watford, Brighton and Norwich, also at Leicester in the shoot out.

KDB missed 2, Mahrez missed 4.

Just watching the games you know Sterling missed a load but have AI tell you he was 100%

Bookies always price up a penalty in-play at 2/9 to score & 3/1 to miss.

Our conversation rate given in this thread seems high. I'd suggest without figures that post Yaya you'd be up on £1 per bet in misses.

Not just City but in general, professional footballers really shouldn't be missing penalties apart from the odd miss kick.

He's a brilliant penalty taker, 16 from 19 is it? Just happened to miss some big ones like yesterday but we win anyway, Bayern but we won anyway, and Everton where we then dropped points. Sporting last season possibly?
We just have a habbit of missing cruicial ones like Aguero against Spurs and Mahrez at Anfield, but always concede in the big matches.

Haaland doesn't get the balance between power and precision of his penalty shots right. He errs on the side of precision.

It's risky to apply too much force, but he can learn a thing or two from Kane who gets the balance right most of the time (he misses too but so do CR and Messi...).

Yeah didn’t look right tbh.

I think it's better to looks at more recent trends than including his pen stats from 5 seasons ago.

Since the start of last season his success rate is 58%. Before that it was over 90%.

For a club with our ambition we I'm surprised we haven't enforced that someone else has a go to be honest.

Haaland is quite clearly a world class striker, the best number 9 in the world, but he doesn't tend to strike his pens cleanly. He actually hit yesterday's better than most that he's scored for us.

Nunes has hit a couple of beauties in his career, he'd be the person I tried out next.

Having said all that I always thought Rodri would be a class pen taker and hit an awful one for us, so maybe Haaland is the tried and tested best pen taker we have.

Don't feel confident with the ones Haaland has scored. If he'd been bearing down on goal with a defender pulling him back, he'd have buried it, but give him nothing but the keeper and they all look dodgy. He's often seemed to miskick, but I've assumed that was sending the keeper one was a scuffing it into the other corner, so the quality of the shot not mattering.

Aguero was another who never looked convincing even we he scored.

Considering how few we get and how important they can be, we need to find someone who can put them away. It becomes a bit self-fulfilling as well - Donnarumma is seen as a having a good record, which must get into the head of the opponent making it more likely they mess up and he saves. Ederson was the other way to the point where I'd have fancied my chances.

We need another Yaya / Mario where the keeper doesn't expect to save it. Hopefully whoever it is can also take free kicks...
