Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Really not sure why teams dont start the match playing that way. Maybe it's a bit riskier for them, I dont know.

That’s exactly what Newcastle did in the league cup fixture and we were 3-0 up after half an hour.

That’s why teams don’t do it so much. All it takes is 1 guy who can beat his man marker and run at the defence like Doku did in that game then you’re toast.

Watched the replay today after reading some of the above comments, expecting to see a dismal 2nd half. That did not happen, what I saw was a hard fought half between 2 teams putting it all out there. We had several great opportunities to score and I believe we will capitalize on these in upcoming games. Newcastle “threats” were basically long ball prayers dealt with by our D and keeper. Newcastle is a very talented team; if Pep was their manager they would be competing for the PL title. For those who compare this team to the 4-in-a-row team, that was a once in a lifetime team. And regarding Donnarumma compared with Ederson, I liked Ederson, but we are better off now.
You always get a different, and usually better view of a game if you watch a re run. There’s no emotion involved as you know the outcome, so you notice what actually happened, not what you are expecting or hoping to happen. It looked awful live but I suspect what actually happened was that we put in our best defensive performance for quite a few seasons. I mean, apart from the last minute save by Donna, which actually was probably going wide, how many other hard saves did he have to make?

I agree. I watched the game again yesterday after being at the game on Saturday. Watching it live I thought 1) Semenyo was really poor second half and 2) Newcastle dominated. Neither of those things was really correct on watching it back. Semenyo made some excellent defensive contributions and as you say, Newcastle didn’t create much real threat. It doesn’t help that I sit in 001 and most of the stuff I missed happened in the other half of the pitch. One moan though. I don’t think I have seen a second half PL goal scored by us this year. All goals scored in the first half in the far away goal. :-)

That's a good point. A couple of years back all the players we bought were good in 1v1s - this type of game is one where Doku and Kovacic as well, would be really useful driving past people in different areas of the pitch.

It's one of the negatives to throw at us.
Salford sold a quarter less of their allocation and were continuously referring to our empty seats.
It's the price of success for winning four in a row.
The 115 charges aren't mentioned as much recently so they moved on to Pep leaving and empty seats.
Hopefully it carries on meaning were still boiling piss. CTID
As I recall it was the Geordies who started it quite a few years ago at the Etihad. I remember trying to figure out just what they were singing about in that Geordie twang. Couldn't understand what an empty Seat car had to do with football :-)

An excellent win, albeit a nailbiting second half again.

For me, the second half issue should be easy to address, yet we're not managing it. Firstly, it's inevitable the opposition will take more risks to attack us when they're behind at HT.

The key to coping with that is to be patient and retain the ball better, rather than force things. We fight fire with fire looking to kill the game off, but it's been the same in every game this calendar year in the league that we waste chance after chance. The decision making is shocking. We pass when we should shoot, shoot when we should pass or take too many touches. We need to be much more ruthless and then the game would be done. We'd be 3-1 up and we could play keep ball and see the game out.

I feel I'm in a small minority thinking that we played Newcastle off the park! As I live in the NE, I know a lot of Newcastle fans, and most of them were full of it, that they finally gave us a "decent game". Really? OK, it only finished 2-1, and we're susceptible to a sucker punch late equaliser these days, but I thought we completely outplayed them the whole game. We had several really good chances that we cocked up - Semenyo's conversion kick over the bar, Phil's shot well saved, the 2-on-1 with Ait Nouri, NOR's hat-trick chance, the good save to deny Haaland. They created sod all in the second half apart from the late save by Gigi. They had to resort to manhandling us all over the park, and how Burn stayed on the pitch after his early Yellow, I've no idea.

The way some people on this forum post you'd think Ederson was a Sunday League keeper who got lucky. In some ways we still haven't replaced him hence our 2nd half problems.

Second half Newcastle had more zest.
But we managed it really good.
Hence no goals scored on Second half.
Much better Second half performance than we've been seeing this season.
Good news is there's still plenty of room for improvement. CTID

I agree. Kova, imo, has been a big miss whilst injured, he just has that knack of driving forward from centre mid, love to see him doing that.very tidy player.

Any clip of that odd incident near the end when we were penalised for a foul throw, and Newcastle's throw looked much the same?
didnt know penalised for foul throw maybe still watching replay of dias pushing burn off side ..... think var check over but tnt still hope

What the goalie is responsible for second half problems but not first, for the love of god

It's not that complicated. Teams have always come out 2nd half with a plan to press us harder and higher (what have they got to lose). The problem with a high press is you leave a gap between defence and the forwards. If you have a keeper who can break the press by hitting pinpoint accurate 30/40 yard passes to your midfield it makes the opposition midfielders more reluctant to join the press and you can take back control. At the moment we're struggling to play our way out of the press and the alternative is hopeful punts upfield which more often than not come straight back so we never have control of the game.

I stand corrected, punts are definitely more in hope than with Eddie.

Almost none is the answer. I watched it live, and was suffering the tortures of the damned right through that second half. I had the impression it was chaos, us just hanging on by our teeth.
Watch it back coldly. Not so.
