Denton and Gorton by-election - Green Party wins

We’re in a thread about a local by-election, talking about voting intentions.

If it wasn’t so funny it would be painful.
Yes, but you were talking about the specific place where you are from, and then referenced Hazel Grove. It’s not hard to see that people thought you were talking about the actual place of Hazel Grove. Not the constituency.

If it means that much to you after a long hard few days on here after the by-election result, I’ll award you the point.

I specifically said “those tactics won’t work in Hazel Grove, that borders Gorton and Denton” in the context of trying to win votes.

It would have been absolutely obvious to everyone who knew Bredbury was in the constituency.

Let’s leave it there.

Two separate constituencies, that have never been part of one another, have suddenly been lumped together by this council as of 2024.

It was Manchester Gorton, Gwynne followed on from the likes of Afzal Khan and Gerald Kaufman.
Why Denton was added was preciesly because Labour knew their support in Manchester Gorton and safest seat was wavering slightly and wanted it bolstered by their numbers in Denton, splitting the other side into Manchester Rusholme, in an effort to keep both seats Labour.

Didn't work.

Have you got the Labour submission to the Boundary Commission to justify that dodgy claim?

Boundary Commision's proposal:

"The existing Stalybridge and Hyde constituency would remain entirely unchanged, and we proposed an Ashton-under-Lyne constituency containing all the remaining Tameside wards, barring the three Denton wards of Denton North East, Denton South, and Denton West. These wards would be included with four wards from the City of Manchester: Burnage, Gorton & Abbey Hey, Levenshulme, and Longsight in a reconfigured Gorton and Denton constituency. Our Assistant Commissioners considered, and we agreed, that there was very persuasive evidence provided in the representations that the Denton area itself was originally overspill from east Manchester, and that the areas are well linked both physically and in community terms."

Then, "The new configuration for these constituencies was generally well received....
However, there was some opposition to the Gorton and Denton constituency, particularly from the Burnage ward, where a number of respondents consider there to be no real link geographically or in community terms to Denton."

If he did work for the club, I would have thought they'd frown upon his very questionable tweets, when he'd be expected to act as an ambassador.
Ironic really when the club he loves is owned by bloody foreigners.
Questionable tweets, not under your own name, shouldn’t be a sackable offence. How scared of different opinions are we?

Yep - shown his true colours

Think he may have always been that way and now feels emboldened on twitter to show his true views.

He used to write for the sun many years ago so not a huge surprise he doesn't like people with darker skin and whose religion is Islam.

Scary thing is he now teaches kids.

Not saying I agree with how he put it across, although what I will say is I like Tolmie and always have done, but I will just leave this quote here:

“Some communities can change dramatically and rapidly and that can be disconcerting for some people. That doesn’t make them… xenophobes or racists.” - Jeremy Corbyn

That’s absolutely hysterical mate, I don’t think you actually believe all that

Please don't try and tell us that the author of Americas 'muslim ban' doesn't promote fascist ideology and views.

Right, but my argument is that it was the difference maker for them. The day before the election the polling suggested, by demographic, that white Brits were mostly voting Reform in the constituency, I think I saw 60% off the top of my head, and only 20% of white Brits were voting Green.

Gaza is a deciding electoral issue for a small minority of non Muslims. Reducing immigration ranks far far higher in all parts of the country but for a few pockets.

My point is the Greens tactics won’t work nationwide to win a general election.
The greens policies on taxation, nationalisation, worker's rights, renter's rights, and a raft of economic issues WILL work across the nation, and it is the economy that is, was and always will be the biggest issue in the 2029 general election.
Immigration might be the main issue for a small number of far right racists aided by russian bots, but nowhere near enough to win a general election.

The economy and immigration have been neck and neck, often swapping as 1 and 2, as the most important thing to voters, so far in 2026. Over 2025, immigration was above economy for large parts of the year, according to YouGov polling. Purple is immigration and that weird orange colour is economy below. I think it’s totally disingenuous to say it’s just racists that are concerned with immigration, I think it’s a serious concern and I’m not a racist.

I don’t your post proves anything, he just mentions Farage’s name in one email, so? Going to see more evidence that he worked on Farage’s rise than that mate.

Farage was an MEP well decades ago.

This is not a defence of Farage, I think he’s a tit but he’s not as extreme as Steve Bannon.

Farage is mentioned 42 times ...
