North Stand Construction Discussion

For an 8pm kick off, what time is your average walker getting back to Piccadilly station and what time are the last trains to various destinations? What do you do if that last train is cancelled?

I've never used Ashbury's train station but I'm sure someone who has would be able to say which lines/destinations this services, and whether that's any good or not.

As for these "loads of buses", before the game they're sat in traffic and after the game, in my experience, once the initial queue of buses have gone, you've missed out.

The M60 is a car park these days and cannot be considered a fun or reliable way to travel during anything even resembling peak times.

The canal is being criminally neglect as a way of getting people pissed erm sorry, back to Piccadilly

In comparison the Rags have got 5 Metrolink stations close to Old Trafford.
Pomona, Trafford Wharf side, Exchange Quay, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Trafford Bar.

City have got 3 Metrolink stations. Etihad Campus, Asda, Holt Town.

You can walk from Old Trafford to town in 15 minutes along the Chester Road dual carriageway.

I'm not sure about the bus services, but I'd think they are pretty frequent on Chester Road.

On top of that, these are the transport improvements planned for the new Circus Tent, if it ever gets built?

Key Transportation & Development Aspects:
  • Rail Expansion: A core goal is to transform the existing rail freight terminal into a dedicated, high-capacity passenger station.
  • Metrolink Improvements: Current tram capacity is heavily strained on matchdays, necessitating upgrades to the Altrincham line services (Old Trafford, Wharfside, and Exchange Quay stops).
  • Infrastructure Synergy: The transport strategy is integrated into the wider Trafford Wharfside development plan, aimed at reducing dependence on road transport.
  • Pedestrian & Traffic Flow: Plans aim to alleviate the congestion on local roads, which currently causes significant disruption to local residents, by creating better pedestrian routes and improved traffic management, especially around the Trafford Park area.
Whilst Andy Burnham has been sucking the Rags cock over their new stadium and promising them what they need to make it all a reality, he's given City and City fans fuck all regarding our transport needs since he became Mayor of Gtr Manchester 9 years ago in 2017.
Andy Burnham was repeatedly warned about imminent pressures with Co-op Live and development at the campus. He did nothing. The area has new schools, houses, an arena, a 60,000 stadium. The parking has been restricted and the trunk road capacity reduced. There is dangerous overcrowding on the Metrolink. Now Holt Town is being developed. Walking back to Picadilly at night is not an option for young families or people with health issues. It is a disgrace. There can’t be any other large stadium in Europe with such poor transport.

I'm fortunate in that the walk to/from the city centre is something I can do with no issues, even if it usually results in getting soaked. Which is what I do every game as the transport options are shocking and often take longer, especially if you take into account waiting for a tram you can actually get on. I sympathise with anyone who would struggle with, or simply could not do, this walk. Those are the people the club and our Scouse council leader should be thinking about and trying to look after.

I get the "green" approach of trying to get cars off the road but this only really works if there are viable and cheap alternatives. The fact proper transport links weren't considered either when the stadium was first built over twenty years ago, or when the arena was being planned, says it all. I fear the horse has bolted in that regard and any hope of new tram stops etc is nothing but wishful thinking.

Its an utter shit show. The council won't spend the money, so it will only get resolved if City pay for it.

And don't forget the massive (arf) Collar site proposal when that is finally made public.

Burnham is throwing the fitted kitchen at the Rags, whilst he's given us a mixer tap.

JRB you forgot those pretty lights and banners on the walk to/from the stadium - £450m Coop Live, £300m+ North stand, transport infrastructure £10k!
United also have Media City which is less than a 15 minute walk
You would think City would have a lot of sway with MCC but is it Burnham being a blocker to what they could do as not part of an overall GM plan?

And yes; I fully appreciate that there are folk who are physically incapable of walking into town.
I can still do it as I approach my 80’th birthday but it is a bit of a faff these days. I would much prefer a world class transport system but that is just a pipe dream.

Ashbury's - you can either go to Piccadilly, or going the other way they go to New Mills Central, Hadfield or Rose Hill Marple

For tomorrow nights game a 7:30 kick off (let's say it finishes at 9:20pm as very little added time) - also all of these trains start at Piccadilly

Last train to New Mills Central (via Bredbury, Romiley, Marple etc...) is 9:19pm

Last Direct train to Rose Hill Marple (via Hyde North, Hyde Central, Woodley etc...) is 7:55pm

For Hadfield (via Godley, Hattersley, Broadbottom, Glossop etc...) they're trains at 9:37pm, 10:06pm, 10:37pm & 11:33pm

When you consider the billions invested by Sheikh Mansour and Silver Lake in East Manchester it is an insult. No begging bowl for taxpayers to stump up. Proper investment. And the response from politicians has been pathetic. No Northern Powerhouse rail improvements, no improved roads, a few shuttle buses, no increased train service at Ashburys, a slashing of services from Avanti and Northern Trains. No wonder this country is totally fucked.

Burnham seems hostile to City. I don’t know why. He has never given any public support even after we were cleared by CAS. He rarely mentions the club at all even though Sheikh Mansour must be the biggest single investor in Greater Manchester. Khaldoon is also crucial to our region in his role with the sovereign wealth fund. Burnham likes to take a lot of credit for all the changes driven by the late Howard Bernstein.

Worth a try,

This is why I did it, we need better transport links, other clubs that are hosting the Euros are getting money spent on stations

If the club want to sell the area as an Entertainment District, then it needs miles better transport links to the town centre.

Driving is chaotic, walking is often hindered by rain, and overcrowded trams do not help sell the area. Additionally, there is no update on building a train station.

Why do the club not build an automated people carrier that links a main transport hub and campus? This could be between Mayfield Park and the Etihad Campus, and could be built through the Medlock Valley, pictured below

Luton has done this at their airport, which is called the DART- Etihad DART to Etihad Campus

London also has this with the DLR

The club spent millions on City Link at Holt Town

So, with this suggestion, I wrote to the Mayor of Manchester

Old Trafford to Piccadilly station is twice the distance of the Etihad to Piccadilly. They might have a lot of tram stops but there's still only one line into Manchester

I doubt if Burnham has even read that letter sent by one of his minions. The letter is a joke isn't it? His solution to solve the transport shambles is "more trams." To put it into context the volume of people leaving the expanded Eithad Stadium plus Co-op live on a gig night is 86,000. The same size as a major event at Wembley Stadium. How many of those will enter the very small space between the North Stand (complete with hotel and City Hall, the Co-op live arena, and the Metro Station. Will they enter that area (as happens now) from opposite directions alongside the queue for the tram stop and the bridge? There is no mention at all of this area at all in the transport strategy plans which were included in the North Stand planning documents. Just a disaster waiting to happen. Just like all the warnings about the MEN arena were ignored before the attack.
