Getting old

You haven’t paid a penny towards your state pension.
Your NI paid the pensioners whilst you were working.
Having paid NI for 35 years plus you qualify to get a state pension paid for by tomorrow’s workers.
I had no choice.
They extracted it from my salary as a percentage of my pay and are now giving it back to me gradually whilst at the same time seeing why I am not dead.

The problem is when AGI arrives in the next 10-20 years there won't be any human workers to pay for our state pension.

How are you coping with it?

Had a good few tonight, granted.

By my user name, I’m now mid 50s. This week I’ve been to a funeral of a friend’s relative who was in their 60s. I have a friend dying of cancer and another in a stroke ward who was fine until this time last week.

Today I went for a walk and it was a park run in chaddy park. A lot of men older then me, running and all these bright young things loving life.

I don’t like getting old. How you all
Coping with it?
To tell the truth I feel lucky after so many battles with cancer and health issues I’m still here and so many friends and family are not.
I’m going to a wedding in two weeks time it’s very rare because it’s all funerals of people much younger than me.
A friend of ours died last last July suddenly age 46 I mean that was the third death and funeral for us last year.
Our children had Weddings and Christenings, family and friends celebrations but all that entertainment has passed by as young people are no longer doing those things they don’t have the money for the things we had

I’ve just realised that I’m definitely old! United Utilities has me on their vulnerable list! There was a water leak somewhere near me and they rang me to let me know and also sent me an email. Then when the water came back on they rang again to tell me it was all sorted.

*sobs into the cushion* I’m old, I’m old now I can’t shout and scream when we score. Now I can’t begin the City songs like ‘tearing scousers/cockneys apart again’. Now I have to be sensible.

It ain’t going to happen!!!!!! But I appreciate UU’s care. :-) :-) ;-) ;-)

Yup. I got a surprise when a hosepipe ban was announced. Yorkshire water wrote to inform me that I was exempt as a vulnerable person. Spent the summer watering the garden with a hose but, disappointingly, nobody challenged me.

Great hair and not looking too old keeps me going and not miserable. I walk about 20k a week. I hardly drink now, not a big life decision, I just can't be arsed. I still work and am relatively fit. I keep my mind active and can still catch things that fall out of our overpacket high food cupboards. I swear there is stuff way at the back, that I paid for with thruppeny bits.

Have pals who make you laugh and you them. I eat well and I have always drank a lot of water and my favourite treat since a nipper is fruit. I was always young looking for my age and retain a bit of that.

Always remind myself, yesterday is gone, Kaput, tomorrow not guaranteed, so enjoy the present. It's all we have.

Oh, and don't be a ****. Kindness costs nothing..

Good for you mate. Also drinking water and being properly hydrated is one the most important things to keep you healthy - I learned that the hard way.

its not some mantra I have. I just like it. Cutting back on the drink, these 30 years has been really good. Again, no big sacrifice as I just got fed up. I had some run and dont regret a single day. I still have a drink, I just don't do it too often. That has really helped me. If you tell yourself, you're old, you will be. Not just in chronological terms either. This isn't a practise run.

That’s a great take on things. For some reason this morning I woke up and felt compelled to go on a morning walk, and so that’s what I did. Just half hour, ironically walking round the local cemetery which then leads onto a walk route I like. Back working for 7 and today has been a good day. I am also drinking two litres of water per day with phizz electrolytes. Been on that two weeks and it’s definitely working.

Just the booze I need to drastically reduce now and I’ll feel that much better in general.

Walking about grave yards I love. Especially the old ones. keep it up. And reducing the booze I guarantee you will feel so much better.

As Billy Connolly said. i reduced my drinking when it was still my choice. That doesnt mean you cant enjoy a drink. Just need to remind ourselves we arent 30.

Fancy a Scotsman still being able to do all that at 25 :-)

Yes. There will be older ones but the oldest I’ve seen so far was a chap who died in 1776. He made it to the then ripe old age of 66.

77 shortly. Two hips done - park run most Saturdays (gone are the days of 16min 5k's more like 45 mins) but still faster than those sat in bed. People complain about triple lock but I now have to pay 20-30 year olds to do what I used to do at 20-30. Just got to keep moving (volunteer 3 days a week) which motivates me to get up. Life just passes me by now and struggling to keep up. AI? Mobile phone more complicated than ever and don't get me started on the f..king tv. Why can't I just switch it on and select a channel??
