I’ve reflected on some of my posts yesterday and I can see why some people may have taken them badly. That genuinely wasn’t my intention.
I don’t hate anyone based on race, religion or background, and I don’t want to come across as bigoted. My concerns are about the scale of immigration, pressure on communities and services, and the feeling that people’s concerns are often dismissed too quickly as racism.
This morning I was in the gym training alongside black, Asian and other people from all backgrounds. Everyone was getting on, helping each other and treating each other with respect. To me, that’s what a healthy society should look like.
At the same time, I think a lot of people feel uneasy about whether integration is really happening properly in some areas. Many immigrants absolutely do integrate, work hard, contribute and become part of British society. But I also think it’s fair to question situations where communities seem very separate from wider society.
For example, if people live here for years but have very little interaction with British culture or wider society, some people are naturally going to question whether integration is working as it should. I don’t think asking questions about integration, shared values and social cohesion should automatically make someone racist.
Whether people agree or disagree, these concerns are real to many ordinary people, and dismissing them outright is one of the reasons parties like Reform are gaining support.
