Getting old

As previously documented, in the last few months, I've had my fair share of investigations. Chest, heart, prostrate MRI and biopsy, ENT, which is awaiting procedure. Last Thursday, I said to my other half, "At least there's one consolation. In a couple of months, I'll be 75 and will have dodged jury service". Next day's postal delivery, you are cordially invited to Minshull Street Crown Court to partake in said Jury Service. My first thoughts were on the chosen dates. I'll hopefully be sunning myself on the Greek islands of Rhodes. By the time I get back, I'll be only a few weeks away from cut-off age. Not so, you can serve until you're 76. Anyhow, I've informed them of my upcoming holidays (health permitting) and also my hacking cough that would not be conducive to a silent courtroom.

I retired 2 and half years ago, my best mate got brain cancer and was gone in 5 weeks.
I thought , fuck this.
Met the love of my life 2 years earlier and moved to York and got married last May at the ripe old age of 67.
I thought i'd get a daft part time job but I have no energy. Lost 2stone, mainly muscle mass. I just wanna sleep.
Finding harder to get to midweek games now, 2 hour drive on the M62 each way is just not for me.
Losing my season ticketfor next season due to not attending enough games.
Had a double by pass 4 years ago, got type 2 diabetes, had a camera down my Japs eye recently to check for bladder cancer, due to peeing blood. Everything ok....then yesterday peeing blood again.
I'm supposed to be going Greece on Sunday.
I might just phone the docs this morning, or do I just chance it.

The joys of being a grumpy old bastard eh!
Give them a bell BOJ as rolling the dice should be the exclusive preserve of a casino.

Is that what John Thaw had ?
Wasn't aware of that but having just read up, yes it seems he got it following an injury at aged 15. I suppose I'm fortunate not to have suffered it all my life and while it does radiate a fair bit of pain it doesn't stop me getting about, just a good bit slower than before.

I'll remember the pain before the surgery for the rest of my days, easily the worst I've endured and I've had broken ribs, broke both collarbones and suffered a brain hemorrhage, none of them came close to the agony in my left leg.

I'm in a similar state with torn meniscus in my right knee, I can walk for a few hundred yards, but then it kicks in and i can end up limping or hobbling because of the pain/ discomfort, so i too end up walking a lot slower than when i first started out ...... it soulds like you've really been 'through the mill' there with what you've suffered.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, as they say. I'm really making the effort with walking, at least a couple of miles each day if I can, spread throughout the day though, like yourself a couple of hundred yards and it starts. I was going to apply for PIP but you can't apply once over 66yo, attendance allowance is available and not means tested but you have to have had the condition for at least 6mths before applying, if this doesn't improve I will be trying for it, paid in all my life, time to get something back.

Will you need a knee replacement, or can it heal?

For home games I used to get the train into town and walk there & back to the stadium, couldn't even consider doing that now, doubt I could manage the spirals due to the gradient, up or down.
Haven't tried driving my car since I came home, it's a heavy clutch pedal and I'm not confident enough yet. This one really has changed my life in a few ways.

I retired at 56 to spend more time with family, fishing, city and holidays. Thank fuck I did because you just do not know when you will get bowled a Yorker in terms of health. At 68 I am now facing an operation on a brain tumour in the next few weeks. The same day as my season ticket renews. At least I will have a decent excuse for missing games next season.
All the best…..
