There's no precedent to look to to guess what the sanction may be.
It could be a small fine or it could be expulsion from the play offs.
If it had been in the league, I guess there’d be a fine and a 3-0 forfeit of the game, but that can’t really be done now having played out the second leg at 0-0.
My gut suggests they’ll get a hefty fine and if they go up, sued by Middlesbrough for potential loss of earnings. All depends on the evidence you mentioned. If it’s multiple times, it could be expulsion.
I reckon it'll be a fine. Simply because I couldn't imagine them pulling Southampton out.
Mate of mine is a legal eagle and suggests the wording of the information given by the EFL thus far about the case and potential change of game is them clearly them expecting and laying the groundwork for an explosion given by the independent panel, or at least being a big possibility.
I'd like to see a them thrown out. I think we need harsher penalties in football rather than just fines. Owners of clubs probably lose more running for the bus than some of the fines given out.
People may want to play it down saying that spying on training sessions wouldn't affect the outcome of the game. Well why do it then? Southampton obviously think it does.
If football wants sporting integrity, then start handing out bans that affect the actual sporting side. Otherwise Southampton may benefit from blatant rule breaking and will laugh off the fine if the Premier League money rolls in.
