18 other Premier League teams wish they’d had as good of a season as us in the League, while every club in the country wishes they’d had a better season than us in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
All of that from a season that looked to be going in the shitter at one point and then looked like it would result in a Domestic Treble a minute later.
Sure, we gave away far too many first goals, and gave up too many points from winning positions, but Pep and the boys pulled this season out of the fire with some excellent performances and it was thisclose to being a ridiculously good season. Instead, we had to settle for a really good season of transition, and we are set up for an even better one next season if the correct recruitment takes place.
I’m proud of the fight the players showed to get themselves over the line in two Cup competitions and to stay in contention until the end of a strange old Premier League season.
Giving the narratives in play, our season will be swept under the carpet of history because of Arsenal’s win after so long, but it should never be forgotten for what we achieved and how.
Pep or no Pep next season, we are going to find out if the club really is organized in such a way that success is virtually assured due to quality recruitment and a stable club structure.
Lastly, we have to understand what “success” means to a Premier League club, and possibly even rationalize the proper yardstick for using that word.
To me, Champions League football, going deep in all competitions (possibly winning one) and competing for the Premier League title is a successful season. We have been used to being spoiled by the best coach in the world and teams that were built by him for the jobs he needed doing. That team is, once again, going to change dramatically this off season, and my (our?) expectations should be focused on a realistic gauge of success, not necessarily the “20 in 10 yrs” that we have lived through.
One thing I know…the Community Shield Season Opener could be a tasty affair next season, and that’s just the amuse bouche for the season ahead.
I wish Pep nothing but the best with the Italy National Team if he does leave, but selfishly, I hope he stays, brings Maresca back as an Assistant, and creates a seamless transition that would be the envy of most clubs.
The Future is BLUE!
