Punk and New Wave thread.

nice one, mate.
2 of my favourite bands who still nail it.

i'll be back in november.
manchester, chester, stoke, 3 nights in a row.

I've seen ToH, SoD, the Armoury Show but never Skids as I was too young. Just finished the Stuart Adamson biography, tough going for him.
theatre of hate were and still are incredibly powerful.

i didn't and still don't like spear of destiny because the name is stupid, haha, i never gave them a chance and simply refuse to listen to them because of it.

if you fancy meeting up for any of the 3 gigs i mentioned give me a shout, mate.

I will do. KB is a much misunderstood character. I honestly didn't like the name either. There is a lot of crossover from ToH/SoD in 1982 when the first SoD album is basically all ToH before it went mad with their mad manager and drummer being under the influence. Stan was a good pal of Mani Stone Roses, even though he was a red.

i was mad for southern death cult.
when they were announced as the support for the TOH westworld tour i nearly died and went to heaven.
i did the lot, with my mate helen from bacup = stage invaders!

First time I saw Cult was 1984, maybe they were Death Cult but was Billy on guitar, Nigel on drums. One year later they were on TOTP selling Sanctuarys. haha

First and only time I saw Southern Death Cult ( Or whatever they were called at the time ) was at the Student Union on Oxford Road. Early/ Mid 80s probably. It was like we were the only people there who weren't personal friends with the group and didn't know everyone else. Ended up getting a couple of digs and my mate got a bottle on his head. They didn't seem to like outsiders. Could say a bit like a cult even.

Didn't even particularly like them. Only went for something to do

Seen this and asked the Mrs if she fancied going , I got a resounding no reply . I told her when Girls Aloud come to town she can do one :) . I’ll be there , Pep I can’t believe you’re not into Spear !

that's pretty much how it was, actually.
there were scores (if not hundreds at times) of us from all over the uk in those days.
slackers hitch-hiking everywhere and dossing down on people's floors.

you'd see that a band had announced a tour and be determined to do most if not all of it.

arrive early afternoon on the first date and tell the band you intended to do the whole tour.

the guestlists were enormous because the bands wanted a good following to create a mental atmosphere,
it was part of the deal that you went wild down the front.

at times there were more of us on the stage than in the crowd.
(i recall the stage collapsing in leeds one time for SDC)
we all were there for having fun, nothing else,
fucking mental thinking back but we stuck together and looked after each other.
locals often wanted a fight because they saw it as their patch and they got one if they went too far.

the midlands were always tough.
one time, at a Play Dead gig in birmingham, the local skinheads threw someone off the roof. he died. gig abandoned.

a Sex Gang Children gig in coventry was probably the most insane, even the band ended up fighting.
it seems hard to believe nowadays but it was the reality of simply wanting to go to watch a band.

one Killing Joke tour i didn't even get to properly see them the first 2 nights because i'd been beaten up and lobbed out.

it wasn't, as you suggest, like a cult, it was more tribal.

adam and the antz in swansea and cardiff on one tour was seen by the locals as like the english were trying to invade but people just wanted to hear this raw incredible music and would go anywhere en mass to do so.

don't forget it was all happening on the back of the upsurge in punk music which had been depicted in the msm as violent, which it wasn't.
people fucking hated us for our mohawks and fuck-the-world attitudes.

sorry if you and your mates got a bit of a leathering but i can promise you not one of us ever started a fight.

sdc were 1981-83 from bradford.
a mere 18months of incredible mayhem.
nothing ever like it before or after imho.

on the TOH + SDC tour ian and billy duffy became best mates.
billy convinced ian to fuck the rest of his band off
(the 3 of them went on to become Getting The Fear)
and they dropped the Southern part of the name.

nigel preston was a brilliant drummer and a lovely bloke,
he played for TOH, SGC, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Gun Club too, but sadly he was a smackhead and couldn't keep it together.

SDC were immense.
Death Cult were pretty good.
The Cult just became a rock'n'roll parody but they made their money, that was their aim, so fair dibs to them.

billy duffy is a blue. he is a member on bluemoon.
ian astbury went on to be the singer of The Doors, nuff said

perhaps we should have a bluemoon get-together :)

just cannot be doing with them.

in fact,
a few years ago, maybe only 4 or 5, they played at manchester academy, that downstairs part.
a mate who loves them said, listen, i'll get the tickets, i'll buy your drinks, stop being a dick and give it a go.
so i did.
fucking rubbish hahaha.
they did do a joy division cover that was okay but otherwise nope.

i adore every other thing that kirk brandon has been a part of and carries on to be.
he's a trooper with an amazing voice who still puts it out there year after year.
(could be that he's still covering the costs of his failed high court claim that he and boy george weren't lovers)

Fair play , I’m more of a Spear fan than TOH . He’s been doing the rounds for some years now and still belting it out .
He’s got an amazing back catalogue of songs , one of of the best post punk songwriters we’ve got .
Haven’t seen them for a while , they used to play the witchwood in Ashton quite a few times and his solo acoustic set was great .
The Mrs is definitely a no goer for the gig so a meet up with like minded blues sounds good . :)

Great post. And pretty much how I remember it all.
I was never a Death cult fan ..as they were known when I first became aware of them
Rock City notts was full of DC fans,and..I heard the music, didn't stand out to me,so I never went with them...even tho I'd found out Duffy was a City fan, which I thought was pretty cool...so I did sort of keep my eye on them....but I didn't buy their albums or dance to their tunes at RC.....

Then ..a few years later, with the onset of the net and YT...I came across some live footage of SDC
and I just went Wow....they were bloody good, proper goth, dark keyboards wailing vocal.....I thought to myself ..I've missed out here....but still to this day ,I have no SDC ,DC,or TC records in my collection......There was so much going on in music life at the time....some bands do ' get away

But the early SDC material, esp live, is something I'll explore when I retire maybe,lol....cos I hv missed out ' .The bands name ,in its original format SDC was brilliant too.....,so should the music be ..that follows doesn't it ?
Cabaret Voltaire and Siouxsie and the banshees ,Marc and the Mambas......all on the same page
; )
