Picturesque you are having a laugh! Unless grey concrete and shite seedy bars and poverty is your new definition of picturesque! Bare in mind I've said already that I stayed near the central station, near the centre of the city. If the surrounding areas are more pleasant fair enough but from what I saw it is a DUMP.Two things:

Yep, the area around the train station (hauptbanhof) is a dump, as is the area around most train stations in most cities. But there is a ton of open space in the centre (the English garden etc) and you can see the alps most of the year round. I worked in Trafford, right next to Old Toilet, and it's nicer than where I stayed in Munich.
