Should Sterling refuse to go on the tour, LFC will immediately open negotiations with the PFA - over the appropriate punishment. (Mirror)

They keep bragging that he only earns £35k a week so they have him over a barrel.

Max 2 weeks fine is £70k, I don't think that'll bother him too much.

Oh well we'll get him for free in pair of years.... Lol i don't belive for 1 second they 'll let him root in reserves and lose 40 millions of pounds, it would be one of the most stupid things in the history of football

Walk away City they will regret it big time

So would we, I suspect. Not saying we should just bow to their demands, but it's easier said than done to just "walk away". Can't cut off our nose to spite our face.

Difficult position for Begiristain and Soriano. I trust they'll do the right thing though. Whatever that may be.

No it wouldn't.
Ok, in my opinion it is. Currently the squad isn't capable of challenging on all 4 fronts. Yaya is another year older. We need world class additions and Sterling would improve our first team, with the added bonus of being home grown and young. He also plays in a problem position for us. Pogba will be hard to attain and I have no idea who our second targets are. Hamsik is the only one I've hears and he's not what we need at all.

So please tell me if we miss out on Sterling, who can we realistically sign who's just as good?

We will just hold on until they give in.

Liverpool won't let a 40m pound asset just rot away just to make a statement, how idiotic would that be, all just to prove they are still a big club?

Blues set to make a written bid of £40m plus £4m in add-ons this weekend but Anfield top brass are in the mood to hang onto rebel star until January

Liverpool’s owners are prepared to let Raheem Sterling rot in the reserves rather than allow him to leave on the cheap.

Manchester City launched their new bid for the youngster when they made contact with Liverpool on Friday, and have made it clear they will follow that up on Saturday with a formal written offer of £40million, plus £4m in add-ons.

But the Reds' Fenway powerbrokers in Boston are ready to dig in their heels over their demand of £50m or no deal.

Sterling has told the club categorically he will not be on the plane when the rest of the squad flies off to the Far East on Sunday for the start of the pre-season tour.

He missed two days of training this week through illness but did return to the Melwood training ground on Friday to take part in two sessions before and after lunch, as well as joining the squad at a hotel for a meal in-between.

But the club are taking advice over the contractual implications, should Sterling fail to report on Sunday, and they will immediately open negotiations with the PFA - who offered to act as mediators - over the level of punishment appropriate to the situation.

That usually means a fine of two-weeks' wages – around £70,000 in this case – but can in fact be a lot more, depending on the circumstances and the PFA’s stance.

Worse for the player though, is the attitude in Boston.

Owners John Henry, Mike Gordon and Tom Werner have been distinctly unimpressed with his actions this week in trying to force a move, and in attacking manager Brendan Rodgers in the process.

City are determined to get their man, but will make it clear this is a final offer and that they are not prepared to reach the £50m figure that would resolve the dispute.

The Reds’ American top-brass would eventually accept a bid that goes through the £50m barrier, but have now made clear they are prepared to sit the situation out if it doesn’t – which would condemn Sterling to spending months in the reserves until the transfer window reopens in January.

The player still has two years left on his contract, and Liverpool's owners are adamant their plans for further summer spending are NOT related to the sale of the 20-year-old England international.

Even if they manage to agree a £30m fee for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, the American trio are happy to swallow that loss for six months as they refuse to back down from ther tough stance they have taken with City.

I'm firmly in the camp that we shouldn't offer the cheeky bastards more than our second offer. If rejected move on and get better value with a Reus or pay the full fee Juve want for Pogba.

Players like Benteke should have a rethink about going to Liverpool. What happens if they don't satisfy his ambitions in the future then same thing would happen.

Yeah, it would leave us in a bit of a quandary. Do we stump up the full £50m and avoid missing out on the player, but look weak from a negotiating point of view?

Or do we gamble and hope they blink first before the window closes?

Decisions, decisions...

We knew the price from the off and should have known that Liverpool have a reputation for being utter cunts with any player that wants to leave. If we do put a "final" offer in for £40M with £5M in add ons and they turn it down, which seems likely, then we would look utter fools if we finally coughed up £50M. It will have meant a lot of unnecessary hassle for Sterling and a lot of bad blood between City and Liverpool for nothing.

Can't think of many occasions when such a valuable player has been "left to rot in the reserves". Presume we'll just end up paying the asking price to ensure the deal happens, so Liverpool can look like the moral victors in the media.

He's not the only addition that will improve us.

You used the word hyperbole. Not me.

I think we've handled this transfer pretty badly to be honest, especially when we will surely end up paying the full £50 million.

It feels like we're trying to be too cute and clever, rather getting the ball over the line.
