For an interview for an office job - would you wear a suit with tie, or without a tie? Top button undone, or top 2 buttons undone? Suit, or trousers with smart shirt?

Unless it's a software firm, suit/tie all buttons done up.

Can't go wrong with the classic

you don't see anyone wearing a tie these days though...

Many companies are still arsey about things like this, the sad bastards.

It's Pascal's Wager essentially. You go with a tie and you have one you're fine, you go with a tie and don't need one then you still look fine or take it off. You go without a tie and don't need one then you're fine, you go without a tie and need one then you're fucked.

I would always err on the side of overdressed than underdressed if you know what I mean. You are more likely to lose points at an interview for being too casual than you are for being too formal.
Besides which, if you get to an interview and the other candidates don't have ties on you can quickly whip yours off.

I wouldn't take the tie off in that situation.

OP, I assume from your user name you and I are different. I dress to the right.
I would still do so if I were attending an interview as I feel changing such a routine would be an unnecessary distraction at a critical juncture in my career.
Sticking with your natural inclination will allow you to focus more clearly on the interviewer.

It depends on the nature of the job, I'd say dress smarter than you would be expected to dress for the work you will be performing.

My mate wore this shirt to a job interview once (not joking). Believe it or not, he didn't get hired.

Definitely suit and tie.

No matter what.

And pray that you don't actually have to wear a noose round your neck once you get the job.

Some companies are casual, some are not. Some interviewers will be impressed if you dress the way you want to, some will automatically rule you out. You cannot know what is in the mind of the people interviewing you, so trying to guess would be a gamble. The reason people advise a suit and tie is because it can only be a positive and in the worst case scenario it won't be a negative. Anything else might be disastrous.

So a full suit and tie is the ONLY safe option.
