Sunderland Vs City Post Match Thread

No, it's not the main thing. Nobody gives a shit about the League Cup and in fact it's a massive detriment that heavily impacts on the rest come January when you're playing two leg semis at Wembley, presumably still in the FA Cup and the league games. In 13/14 when we went to the semis we killed our squad by overplaying them in December/January, we had 17 games in 2 months and by the time early February game around and it was time to face a just winter breaked Barcelona we were dead on our feet. This is why outright Pellegrini will never win the Champions League because his idea of squad management is playing your best team in every game which batters our squad. Playing Sergio against Juventus, West Ham and in a fucking League Cup game when he's obviously unfit is yet another blunder in this department. No different from how he played Negredo in a League Cup game when were were 6-0 who then picked up a shoulder injury and never recovered his form. It's also why he did well at clubs like Villareal and Malaga who didn't have these fixtures to juggle.

But that's irregardless to the actual point. The actual point is that we're already starting to lose highly talented players because they can't even get a game during the League cup against Championship opposition. Sunderland are soon to be Championship opposition and we gave a £8m signing a debut who has already played numerous competitive league games, played Manu Garcia for 20 minutes then gave George Evans 3 minutes espite the game being won with 60 minutes to go. This is now the 8th consecutive year that we have failed to bring through any youth players into the squad so far. 8 years. Not one player.

We are the only team in the Champions League with 0 homegrown players, meaning we have an actual squad of 21 players unlike the 25 others have which again leads into the other problems

This is a pointless argument on here and I've been having it for years because people have no idea how good our youth players are. Unlike Nacho comes on and scores immediately and now gets posts saying he should play. Obviously he must have taken a major jump in talent in that last two weeks. People on here can't see the wood from the trees, so utterly petrified are they of our youth players that they automatically think that we'll get beat if we play them. Maffeo could walk into most Premier League sides tomorrow. He'd be the best player in any Championship side. Denayer is even better than that and is currently standing out at yet another Champions League club (after previously standing out at a different Champions League club) after we promised him first team football to get him to sign a contract then spunked £30m on a new centre back and fucked him off elsewhere. Think he's happy now? Think he's here for the long term?

I said two years ago that if you couldn't see that this was a developing problem you just weren't paying attention. Now we have 0 homegrown players, constantly knocked out of the February CL game, haven't integrated a new young player into the squad in 8 years and are pissing off most of the youth players who stand a chance to gain actual first team footballer here. If you still can't see it's a problem then it's wilful stupidity.

Until we let an academy product go who turns out to be a worldie (ala Pogba or KDB) I don't think we can complain. In terms of elite European clubs, only the likes of Barca and Bayern regularly bring through top class talent and, without too much knowledge in this field, i'd imagine their academy setup was far superior to ours until very recently.

We've been proven right in our more recent past with the likes of Denis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Abdul Razak, Shaleum Logan & Reece Wabara et al. All players who could've arguably been integrated more into the first team but at the expense of us using a proven world class player. Look what ended up happening to them when they were given regular runs in the first team - nowt, except for Sturridge who would probably have been good for us but I can't say i'm too upset that we didn't persevere with him.

The players are starting to come through as i'm sure you'll admit, I reckon we've already given academy players more minutes this season than they have had at this stage for the last few years and this comes at a time when our squad looks as good as ever.

I'm very positive on the future prospects of our academy - we have a couple of incredible academy graduates out on loan, we have the best academy facility in the world ready to churn out players better than ever, and we have a few who are in the current squad getting minutes here and there.

only concern was the amount of free headers we gifted them in front of goal and the apparent lack of confidence with Sergio, roll on spuds when he normally fills his boots

Can't believe we actually lost last night. Gutted :(

If nobody gives a shit about the League Cup then presumably the experience of playing in it isn't worth anything.

It was a fantastic result given we managed to rest a few key players and generally coast through the game. There were many positives, the best for me was the performances of KDB and Fernando. If they both keep that up we will have 2 new fantastic players.

However it was a bit of an opportunity missed in term’s of game time for EDS players. We should have made the 3 substitutions before 60mins and given the lads time to get into the game and make a contribution. I appreciate that people might take the piss for arguing over the timing of substitutions but when you have the scale of effort that goes into the academy at city and number of players and coaches working their balls of to get kids through into the first team every minute is precious and having senior players just playing a game out like a training match (trying to avoid injury) doesn’t do anything for anyone. Get some kids on there and the feel good factor around the club goes up 10 fold. That said massive improvement in involving the EDS players on recent years is noted.

But in my opinion you've made a terrible blunder recently.

Recently?! We have been making blunders since 2004! First Howard Wilkinson who lasted all of 5 minutes. Then Mick McCarthy game and bought players who would be out played in a pub league game like Phil Babb, Jeff Whitley and Gary Breen. My first ever season as a sc holder was the 15pt season. Roy Keane was found out in the PL. Then we had Bruce and O'Neill who we should have sued under the Trade Description Act. Experience?! Please! And the cherry on the cake was the day the lunatic got to run the asylum - Paolo Di Canio. Poyet got us to our first final since 1992 but neither Bruce, O'Neill, Di Canio or Poyet wouldn't know what a good player looked like if they were taken from behind by one. None of the players they bought could make a good XI. And now Dick Advocaat. Never rains but it pours.

Getting a younger manager in who wants to play a pacey attacking 4-4-2 with wingers might actually be the best bet for you.

We couldn't win a game with any manager or with any formation.

You need changes all over the place in my opinion. On the pitch, in the dugout and in the boardroom. Patrick Vieira given 5 years might be a good type of manager for you and bring a bit more energy and freshness to the team.

Spot on. Ellis, Dick and virtually every squad member needs to be sold. If you think Parick would be a good manager I am willing to try and entertain anyone. I am just desperate for us to turn things around and become good so we can stick it up the backsides of the media and press who laugh at us.

When you went down and went up by beating Bolton Wanderers, how did you cope with relegation and come back stronger?

You say "nobody gives a shit about the League Cup". Can I assume you are ignoring those of us who travelled last night? And those who went to the games when we won it a couple of seasons ago. And will your ticket for the final be spare if we get there; and if you qualify for one.
But thanks for telling me about the two leg semis at Wembley, I missed that change to the competition format.

This game was an opportunity for the players to get to know KDB better without the added pressure of getting 3 points, and the team played with freedom and superb movement that would have unstuck teams a lot better than Sunderland just as easily

Not a bad night out on Wearside last night.

Best bits:
1. Once again we seem to have more than one KDB on the pitch - he was everywhere again
2. First half we monstered Sunderland, just a shame 2nd half wasn't the same"
3. "We glow In the dark, we glow In the dark, we're Man City, we glow In the dark!" - top effort Blues for that chant!

A few negatives though.
1. Sterling needs to go to shooting school - despite scoring a goal and a half he fluffed far to many chances - he's short of confidence in the box i think
2. Whats going on with that scoreboard? Sat in Row 18 upper tier and could only see a sliver of the bottom of it. Forgot my watch so had no idea when any of the goals were or the correct time (40 minute mark) to go down early for a half time pint!
3. A19 shut going home with no warnings on the way up - went all over the countryside on the way back and didn't get home till 1.30AM

Good post reminds me of various points in City’s history pre 2008 when we would have so many alleged big names in the squad who at times were woeful and managers who seemed to have a complete inability to coax a run of form out of anyone.

I think you have to bite the bullet in those circumstances and accept the current management and senior players have failed however you need a long term view. If I was Ellis I would have been scouring Europe for a good young manager who would relish the challenge and be able to bring decent players with him but I would have been doing it for the last 2 or 3 years compiling a list of those I thought could do it. Pochetino and Koeman at Southampton, Monk at Swansea, Bilic at West Ham these are the examples to follow. As for players we have the likes of Roberts, Denayer and Zuculini who would easily make your squad more competitive and would be available on loan – look at Moses at West Ham, Ayew at Swansea.

The problem you have now is that this should have been done back in June with a mass clear out started then and some young pacey players brought in. It’s hard to see how you can do anything from this point in the season.

This brought a smile to my face so I thought I'd post it.. one Sunderland supporter's view from last night in the Football 365 letters page...

A Sunderland fan wowed by City

Manchester City on Tuesday night were simply stunning.

Sergio Aguero is one of the few players i’ve literally applauded off a football field. Yaya Toure is some sort of machine, patrolling the midfield. Hadn’t seen a lot of Kevin De Bruyne but City have a gem there. Jesus Navas was tricky. Raheem Sterling was lightning compared to our defence. Fernando and the others all played well also.

Ironically reflecting on the match, Sunderland actually started brightly. But that was quickly crushed. Aguero slotted home a penalty. De Bruyne expertly fired home the second. Sterling got the fourth and the third was an OG. All in the first half.

City moved quicker than any team I’ve ever seen at the SOL and their crisp passing was hypnotic. Easily one of the best team efforts i’ve ever seen.

Usually when I find my team 4-0 down at HT- it seems to happen quite a bit these days – I’m tempted to shout, swear and generally act like a child but tonight was different. It was like watching someone from a civilised country showing a caveman how to a dial a phone. Football is a simple game but when played like that, it’s magical. Almost revolutionary.

Of course we were out of luck. The third goal went in off our keepers head and at 0-1 Borini had a goal ridiculously harshly chalked off, but that wouldn’t remotely do us justice.

Man City comprehensively outplayed us. The gulf in quality was so big even the City fans got bored and started singing “We’re Man City, we glow in the dark” in homage to their luminous strips.

City were just excellent. Brilliant football, passionate supporters and none of the BS that say Chelsea have when they play. Pellegrini is also far more likable than Mourinho, Wenger, SAF or any other manager.

They are also the only group of supporters i’ve met that still have the gallows humour of when they were sh*te. They don’t rub your noses in when they hammer you (unlike a couple of other big teams in the NW) and I think deep down a few of them would prefer to go back to the days when they couldn’t kick a cows arse at Maine Road. That may change after they become more disliked but I have to speak as I find.

Good luck to them. I’d be staggered if they don’t win the Premier League this season and they would be my pick ahead of any of the other challengers.

To watch, it was unbelievable that these two teams were in the same league. Come May I feel sadly, they won’t be.
Jack The Lad. (Still smiling). Sunderland
