Facts so far -

The targets of the raid were the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks, Abdel-Hamid Abu Oud; as well as Salah Abdeslam and another suspect thought to be a ninth attacker directly involved in Friday’s mass killings. It is not confirmed that these targets were in the apartment at the centre of the raid. Heavy shooting, including automatic gunfire, and explosions began around 4.30am. The raid took place about 2km from the Stade de France, one of the targets of Friday’s attacks. A number of suspects were reported to have barricaded themselves in an apartment, exchanging gunfire with officers. At least seven explosions were heard. Three police officers have been reported injured in the operation, apparently not seriously. Roads have been closed off, with large numbers of police officers and police vehicles in the area. Military reinforcements have also arrived. Residents have been told to stay in their homes and away from windows. Some have been moved to a temporary shelter in the town hall. Transport to St-Denis has been suspended and schools will not open on Wednesday.

Statement released by Paris prosecutor François Molins says a woman blew herself up by exploding a suicide vest during a predawn Saint Denis raid. Three men holed up in the apartment were arrested. Their identities have not yet been established. A man and a woman were also arrested near the apartment where heavily armed people were holed up.

Can somebody explain how increasing the number of cyber spies at GCHQ over the next 5 years is making our streets safer from this sort of attack? The government response will

That means going forward British financial institutions are better protected against cyber attack, make home users less prone to viruses and probably make Britain a better place for business to operate their online presence.

However against a back drop of cutting Police financing by 20% then as a response to Friday I think its bloody woeful. Even 1000 out of the 1900 GCHQ new recruits were already announced back on 9th September

Cyber spies are crucial to public safety. You can have 100 cops on the street these days and not one will know what's going on inside joe blogs house as he plans a terrorist attack, however place a tech guy in a building with a computer and they can provide the intelligence needed to complete raids on addresses to prevent the attack. The more info you can gather the more chance you can prevent an attack.

Most guys competing these attacks are people who watch videos online and "Google" about isis and bomb making and are lone/small groups that want to be part of Isis so think they need to do their dirty work in attacks on our shores.

The prevention is the best way of dealing with it. Either that or have loads of cops and be reactive to it.

I agree, it's likely that London will be targeted and that they'll eventually succeed. However, those 'cyber spooks' will have prevented many attacks already and are the right force to strengthen IMO.

London has been consistently targeted for the last 10 years. It was consistently targeted for forty years before that, only by a different set of terrorists. Not so long ago they did succeed. A young soldier was brutally murdered in the street.

You're right that in time another 7/7 type attack will probably succeed. Appalling though that will be, London will carry on.

French special forces are getting ready for going into Syria. I was having a look at their (unofficial) website yesterday.

They are not to worried about boots on ground when it comes to special forces. as one said, "We don't call it a special operation. We call it Tuesday."

Not wumming mate I am asking a genuine question. I shan't be happy if proved right but I fear I will be one night in London soon.

It said on Newsnight the other night that seven plots had been thwarted in this country this year. At some point there will be one that goes undetected and people will die in this country at the hands of ISIL or another of the many many Islamic terrorist organisations. But having more money and more manpower put into thwarting them, there will be many more stopped before they happen. Just because one or two or six might happen, the extra intelligence and work towards stopping them might stop six times that many so it will be well worth it.

Atheism is not ignorance. It is a choice when looking at religion and making an informed decision that you will follow an enlightened life of realism, not living in a fantasists world.
