Motability - the farce

1 applicant for every 2.7 vacancies in Manchester at present says yes. And no it is not mythical. Thousand of previous long term mobility claimants now working.

But you fail to realise that the vast majority of jobs going might not fit author he vast majority now looking mate.

The local hospital might need several surgeons but they won't just take Bill and Gary on who can no longer claim a benefit, are incapable of doing the job skills wise and possibly physically wouldn't be able even if they could.

It's not black and white or as simple as they want you to believe.

If those in work have more disposable income, then they spend more in the high street, increasing the need for retail staff, spend more in cafes bars and restaurants increasing the number of people employed in the service sector, these newly employed people are then paying tax into the pot not taking out in unemployment benefits.
The working class spend a greater proportion of their wages than the upper middle class, so instead of tax cuts for the wealthy, improve the quality of life for those at the bottom.
On the issue of tax evasion, how many are employed in Boots Swiss headquarters?

Absolutely spot on.

Government have given 300 million to Manchester for homes. Count the cranes in town. I can't get enough lads to work on my sites. Well paid jobs as well.

Which is why the government has increased the living wage and trying to get youth into work.

Mark my words, when the living wage hits, employers will chose to dispense with a lot of older workers eligible and will employ younger staff, able to pay less and the benefits argument for the cast off will start again.

We already get told firms can't afford more that £6.73 so what will suddenly change to allow them to pay far more than that?

No doubt but does everyone on disability looking to come off benefits and find a job have a site card or can lay bricks, fit electrics or bang a roof on?

Do you see my point here mate. This is a group of people who have been off the job market for large spells of time, possibly all their adult lives and they have no skills or even CV.

Most employers won't touch them as well you know.

I do - maybe but they could work in asda?
Who could be given tax breaks for employing long term unemployed?

Maybe they could but Asda as well as several other large supermarket chains have cut staff and costs due to the pressure currently on them.

It's not black and white mate and it's yet another poorly thought out policy. Much like bombing Iraq and then wondering why years on its a thousand times worse than it ever was lol.

Politicians should be nowhere near decision making of this magnitude.

Great debating mate and some good points on both sides hopefully. I hope I have not come across Urmston style but tried to make my points om what is clearly a sensitive subject. Going to have to leave if there as off for a swim!

Great points. Surely moving several hundred ? thousand people claiming sick benefit into work will help as well? More paying into the pot. I don't think your points really address welfare benefits directly however. Please correct me if I am wrong?
Well it's all about government spending really and how they manage that but we should get back on topic. I have no problem with people who can work doing so. (I'd also rather see fit people in work, with a low income being supplemented by benefits and a living wage being paid. So I'm in favour of the living wage but against the tax credit cuts.)

But that has to be qualified in a number of ways. There have to be jobs they can do but the government closed Remploy, which employed a lot of disabled people. And there is plenty of evidence that these assessments, as well as the overall process, is seemingly designed to make things as awkward as possible for many people. I'm also in no doubt that both job centres and private contractors are under pressure to meet targets for reducing benefits and if that means applying sanctions for anything they can get away with, then they'll do it and sod the pain to the customer, who is left destitute because they were in hospital or something when they had a meeting or interview. Cameron plainly was unable to deny this and there are for too many stories backing this up.

Disability benefits are about the same amount as the overseas aid budget so you could also argue that we should prioritise our own less fortunate members of society over other countries.

As with any government expenditure, it should be wisely spent but from the evidence that people who are involved in it are giving us, the current process doesn't seem to do that.

No it's all good mate and goes to show just how difficult so called easy decisions are.

Final thought....Remploy?

See what I did there? ;-)

for those who say this government has not got a clue............ surely you must see it has been a roaring success.
Inheritance tax abolished on property up to £1,000,000
ATOS meeting it's newly defined targets i.e. if you can get here you can work
Corporation tax reduced again
The BEDROOM TAX
The property boom
Benefits for the in-work poor slashed
Those militant junior doctors brought to heel
The NHS holed below the water-line, wont be around much longer
Civil service slashed and slashed again, armed forces, police, fire brigade nurses and other fripperies among the casualties
Teachers leaving faster than can be recruited, more money saved
The top men at the banks responsible for the crash are now safely ensconced as top dogs in the new "challenger" banks set up to try and prevent another crash (i'm not making it up)
multinationals who decide how much tax to pay.
Zero-hour contracts
Unfair dismissal claims that now cost hundreds to bring to court, effectively reducing court time as you could lose more than you win, even if you win the case.

For me that is a victory for thatcherism by a government that is playing a blinder...........if you are a thatcherite of course.

Shameful post.
How can you miss out workfare?
The policy that firces poor people to work for zero wage, free labour to allow the shareholders dividends and CEO's bonus payments to rise while many drown in debt.
And the success of the rise in foodbanks

Trust me im neither left nor right wing, Tory or Labour but i have a mental picture of IDS as a Mill owner, whipping young lads to work harder for slave wages lol.

Do your want labours list too?

Not really..i for one know how dangerous and useless Labour are, but it simply doesnt justify the Tories and their supporters in using Labour as their excuse for failure or to justify them. Frankly all we have heard for 6 years is Labour this and Labour that.....its bollocks and its unforgivable.

Its no different the world over though mate as politicians knowing full well they have no policies of note spend years playing the blame game.

I lived in a post Apartheid South Africa where the ANC to this day blames a government that last held power in 1994!

Yes i agree they do...but the Tories have taken it to a new level, they would soon stop if people didnt swallow it every time.
