The Boxing thread

Now that Frank's negotiated a deal to use Sky PPV platform we'll see Eddie's control gradually wane. Frank gets a lot of stick and the number of cancellations on his cards needs sorting out but he's a proper boxing chap and kudos to him for having the bollocks to create Box Nation which has proved to be fantastic for boxing fans.

Crawford v Postol signed for July

Personally I don't see how people are being so swayed by the "Frank Warrens the nice one and Hearn is the bullshitter" crap... come off it where have these people been the last 20 years? Warren was a notorious bullshitter and all a round nobhead to some of his fighters, deprived fight fans of big fights a lot of the time too by overprotecting them.

Why is Warren the nice guy all of a sudden? Box Nation? Tyson Fury sucking up to him cos they gave him exactly what he wanted when no one else would? He'd have been saying the same about Hearn if he didn't have a fighter with a bigger draw to back for PPV. Also just seen an article that Fury is bitching about Hearn on Twitter and AJ... there's a quote from Fury himself way back when he had an unknown AJ in for sparing, long story short admitted he took a beating and said he has a real future in the sport so whatever crap he comes out with he does rate him. In fact I think they are friends if anything from the way AJ responds to questions about him, there will be a big build up and a fake fued from Fury to build up a fight but it's too soon IMO, do that later on when you both have a worldwide following.

I've unhealthy dislike for EH, but at the end of the day he's a buisness man like the rest. Don't mind Hennessey, looks like he's trying to cut a deal with Boxnation for future fights.

Well Frank has form for not paying his fighters no wonder a lot moved over to Hearns and matchroom. Also the Boxnation going down PPV is a insult to the Boxnation followers and subs. Also if Warren is trying to get a fighter on PPV or his PPV show who has he got that you would go out and buy a PPV fight for. Billy Joe Saunders?? Terry Flanagan ?? or the Smith brother ?? None of them are PPV standard or have the following to be a PPV fight. Yes I could see a Flanagan v Crolla fight being PPV or a Billy Joe Saunders v CEJ but if they dont there is no need for it.

Also see that Ricky Hatton is running shows over here in Dublin with I think Boxnation showing the fights. Fair play to Ricky after the MGM cards over here and the murder at a weigh in this is a good sign for boxing fans over here. He has promised to promote the young up and coming Irish fighters. Also to showcase some of his fighters.

Just watched 'Chasing Tyson' the documentry about Evander Holyfield. His first fight with Riddick Bowe was brutal, the commentator said of Holyfield in the 10th rnd "if he weighs 205, his heart weighs about 204". Took a long time for the 'real deal' to get the credit he deserved. A humble man & a great boxer. It was on BT Sport, well worth a watch.

Fantastic documentary, saw it last week. I, like most people, always liked Evander but my admiration and love for the man went up tenfold after watching this. I wasn't aware of how he got shafted at the Olympics but to see him deal with such a heartbreaking situation with such class and dignity at such a young age shows what a great character he had.

He was on Buncey's show a couple of months back talking about his career for half an hour or so and he came across as humble and just a great bloke.

His fighting nickname is most appropriate.

Frank's come out on record as saying that BN subscribers will not have to pay any extra for PPV events

I think Frank's got the rights to Fury Wlad 2 which is good news for those of us who were pissed off that we missed the interview with Fury in the ring after their first fight as Sky decided to go to a commercial break ffs.

As for certain fights not being worthy of PPV, Eddie has a long list of them imo - is a British heavyweight title fight really PPV standard ?

Yeah saw that with Bunce & Barry Jones. He said George Foreman hit him with the hardest shot. Bounce couldn't stop smiling.

No it was not PPV standard that fight. Sad thing is that AJ is going to be the PPV fighter on sky. He has the general sports fans backing who are silly with there money so thats why his British title fight was on PPV and every other fight he fights will be too. Thats sad for the sport in general. Also Warren was a **** for the PPV fights always put on a PPV with a shit PPV card for a half decent fight. Lets be honest Matchroom are no saints but the last AJ fight the PPV had 3 world title fights with Selby and Jamie McDonald also had a good fight with Macklin v Rose and George Groves all on the undercard some of those fights would of been good fights for any card and would of headlined a few too. So it would of been worth a fee to some fans. I dont buy the PPVs any more never will while I can stream them.

I take your point.

One thing that annoys me about Eddie is the all your eggs in one basket way he puts cards together to justify a PPV. Take the example you used of the recent AJ card with Selby, McDonnell and Groves on the undercard. A few years ago on Sky before Eddie took over, that card could've been spread over 2 separate weekends. Selby v Hunter was a big fight in it's own right probably bigger than AJ's for a keen boxing fan, McDonnell's fight wasn't the most competitive but he deserves an easy ride after his recent travels and Macklin v Rose was a real trade fight as they say. Eddie's desire to dupe the general public and earn big bucks for him and AJ is fair enough - that's his job but Sky need to look at the bigger picture and realise that boxing fans are drifting away from them because they rarely put on a decent card outside of Eddie's mega PPV fests. It's not so long ago that they used to have Friday Fight Night most weeks with a really decent fight headlining.

Casual fans who buy PPV events pay little attention to the undercard and so there's no process by which new fans of the sport can be drawn in organically over the weeks and months of the boxing season watching good quality fights 2 or 3 times a month. They just wait for AJ's next PPV and if he gets bombed out a few fights down the line then those fans are lost to the sport cos they love AJ not boxing.

Read Boxnations 'Live Event' PPV offerings. A one of event is £30 ffs. Their tactic is to do an English Card starting at 6pm and then merge into American headliner at 2am. Or you pay £12 a month etc.
Robbing gets, The english domestic fights on Sky are great, but Eddie's English PPV fights ranging from £15 to £28 is garbage too.

Then you will get people giving out about how poor the PPV card was if there wasnt a good co main event type fight. Granted it didnt need 3 world title fights. Im shocked Selby isnt being pushed in Wales by now he could do well out there with the World title if he aint in the US. As for Jamie McDonald he is a smart fighter who will get a few big fights by the end of the year I hope. I think without the real boxing fans then it would be a case of it being lost and off our screens quick enough some also buy there PPVs too. I always say it you cnt beat it if you can get to a fight at times.

I've always found Boxnation to be good value for money, lots of decent programmes on as well as plenty of live fights, from the amateurs up to the top fights in the states. My only gripe is that it's only in HD if the fights live, all other programmes are not. Apart from City, i'll always watch live boxing over football so 12 quid a month is money well spent for me.

The £30 charge is probably designed to make new customers think fuck me £12/ mth is good value.

May's £12 buys you Canelo Khan and Wilder Povetkin

With Selby, Hearn's won't be pushing for genuine world class fights with Russell or Leo Santa Cruz or even Loma, he wants Warrington who's a good little fighter but a proper backward step for Selby and then maybe Quigg after that if he chases Frampton up to feather. I'd happily buy Selby v LSC or Loma but I'd be pissed off being charged £17 for Selby v Warrington

Well Santa Cruz v Frampton is all sorted by reports for the Barclays Centre in New York on July 30th. That should be a good fight. Think Carl wins by late stoppage or points.

As for Selby V Warrington as a PPV fight you cant put it PPV. Your going to have a stage with Hearn and Sky that they could get some fights on PPV granted but not all World Champions are PPV fighters. Take Cleverly v Bellew never a PPV fight , AJs British title fight , Groves v DeGale , Haye v Valuez , Harrison were all PPV fights but should never have been.
Then you get some fighters like Crolla and Quigg who get PPV fights too are they PPV standard not really. Frampton v Quigg should of happend years ago Crolla World title if he didnt get attacked he would of been fighting on normal Sky like he will be next week.

Hearn has his PPV star now in AJ but i know that if these fights happen all will be PPV.
Minus AJ
Groves v DeGale , DeGale v Callum Smith all PPV fights.
Amir Khan v Kell Brook , Brook against any of the other belt holders too.
Crolla v Terry Flanagan highly unlikely it will happen.

Never gets the credit he deserves Holyfield, a true warrior of the sport.
