Europa League

'Trying' involves more than just walking out onto the pitch. There's been way too many games where we played like all we had to do was turn up.

As for the Europa, I'd rather we fielded a squad team. Not worth jeopardising our league form by bothering with it.

We would field a squad team, But it would still be disruptive to our league preparations.

True. We just have to hope that for the last two games our players rediscover form and purpose. Not holding my breath.

its my hope that this thread becomes obsolate after todays performance
Knowing City we'd probably beat Arsenal and lose to Swansea - though obviously as I've thought about it and shared it, this is a more unlikely scenario now.
Oh and just for completeness we could lose both!

What a pathetic insult to a 3 trophy in 3 years winner and to Sheikh Mansour and the board, spoken like the gutter press.

Calling pellers out for stupid comments isn't insulting the owner or board. This week his "I don't mind us finishing 5th" and the quoted comment are insulting to the fans that have backed him while we have been served up some dire football

I wonder what Guardiola must be thinking about this honestly. The man every single time got until at least the CL semis in his career. thats his level where he operates.
From that to go the Group K or Group R to face the third of Switzerland, second of Moldavia and Champion of Latvia who failed in CL playoff but will survive in EL its all very strange.

Even worse that there is a good chance there would be 5 English teams in EL next season without City.

Not even mentioning the financial hit it would mean, the worse calendar schedule, simply more games which we really dont need next to the domestic cups.

How did we get here and how did the club let it happen? With a DoF system the blame cannot be 100% at Pellegrini's door.

What he actually said the other day was that it would be disastrous to finish outside the top four.

If we end up here, we play the same kind of team that turned out at The Bridge for BTs showpiece! In fact, I'd play the EDS team!

If we are in the Europa League we will try our best to win it. Some fans here may not be interested but in Europe it is a very important competition. We are interested in improving our profile so a win in this would be great. We were very happy with our European success all those years ago. More likely the domestic cups would be used for younger players.

Wherever and whoever we play I shall have the ticket, but I think that Leicester have not had the 'diversion' of any cup runs this season and it hasn't done them any harm. And it also gives the kids the best opportunity to show Guardiola and us what they can do!

pre wednesday Gary Lineker had made that suggestion regarding 5th place and when pressed Pellers said finishing 5th was not a problem, after wed he said it would be a disaster, point being he makes stupid comments and is equally ambiguous that as polite and charming as he is can cause this lack of empathy with some fans

If we end up in the Europa, the only (well-disguised) blessing will be that we should the focus 100% on winning the title. That is, winning the title, not just finishing Top 4.
If, to achieve this, we have to play mainly kids in the Europa, so be it. At least it will give them much-needed first-team experience and lots of air miles. Under no circumstances should we allow anything to get in the way of the pursuit of the English title. (I think this is one of the things that went wrong this year - a decision to prioritise the Champions League on the assumption that we couldn't possibly fall below 4th anyway.)

absolutely this. arrogance beyond belief.

At some stage we need to stop paying lip service to youth development and actually give it a high priority. What does that actually mean in practice? Well we should give the manager a brief that his targets are the Premier League and Champions League, and that we wish to use domestic cup competitions to blood youngsters. This may not be popular with the fan base, but I believe the majority would get on board if this was announced as club policy, and they were to see some promising youngsters being given a chance.

I have absolutely no problem with the EL, said many times I actually prefer it. that said I'm a fan not a player that we are trying to entice to the club. the level of player we need to be looking at really will only sign for a club in the CL, Pep is a big big draw but his status can only carry us so far. we could easily be left with a majority of this squad, they are on big money and have contracts, who is going to take yaya, kolorov off our hands for instance. I wont even go there with Bony.

despite my misgivings I still love our club and as soon as the last ball is kicked i'll be itching for the fixtures to come out next month and we go again. if we are in the EL then so be it, they are great trips. quite how the wristband thing will work I don't know, some grounds we will visit hold like 5000 fans with us getting 800 at best. this is the knock on of the manager fucking about with our team and or at the very least taking his eye off the ball. he has let down the fans, cost the club millions and lost us the chance to sign the very best players out there.

and still people support him, from afar yes but they still support him. madness.

Failure to progress in the Europa League would mean a set back in UEFA standings and being placed in a lower group in the CL for perhaps some years with a risk of coming up against two top teams in the group stages. Sometimes you have to play CL on Wednesday and PL on Saturday. That is no difference from Thursday and Sunday. Progress in both competitions makes challenging in the PL more difficult but that will definitely be what the owners want.

How does being in the CL make it easier to dispose of the players you mention?

Am I right in thinking we will be highly seeded if we end up in the EL groups? And would that lead to at least a couple of east European games against teams seeded much lower? Will we, as a team with 5 CL seasons end up in pot 1 for the groups?

Even if we play a "Chelsea team" it still means Guardiola and the coaching staff spending 2-3 days supervising the EL match rather than preparing the team for the next PL game. It still means that the first team players that are not involved are limited in numbers during training, ticking over rather than focusing on the next game.
