I'm so glad I'm deluded. there are at least 15 players in the squad that need upgrading before Joe. Even then there are only a couple in the world that can be upgraded to - certainly not Lloris or Courtois. On top of that there is the major issue of having home grown players in the squad.

While we're at it Joe's distribution has been brilliant for England. Amazing what happens when players more to give him options

Not all mind, but certainly some aspects that can only come with experience. 21 years of age falls into the kid bracket. There are exceptions of course where a player can hit the ground running at 17 and continue on an upward curve throughout their career but these are few and far between. In most cases young players will be inconsistent and have various shortcomings. For most of them they're allowed to mature as players without the gleaming spotlight of the country on their shoulders and aren't transferred for huge sums - that's Sterlings problem. We've paid the kind of money that should bring in a ready made superstar without the teething problems and Sterling isn't that.
It'll get worse because every error will now be magnified, every poor pass, loss of possession or chance missed will have him derided as 'dogshit' and 'waste of money' and his already fragile confidence will get worse. The best thing for him now is to not play any more minutes this tournament, get away for a few weeks somewhere he won't be recognised and recharge his batteries before getting back to the club and have Pep put an arm around his shoulder.
I fear for the lad though. He's being treated disgracefully by the media over the last couple of games. I hope he's got a strong family life to help him get through because it'll be hurting him.

Staggering - some forget what this guy has helped us to achieve, the incredible saves he has made in critical games. The fact that he is part of our recent fabric, he cares big time about the club and fans. He smiles so doesn't care yet Hodgson has come out and said Joe apologised to the players at half time for the goal. Let's not let all this get in the way of criticising him when he makes a mistake. ALL keepers do. Why is it that we continually criticise our own players I just don't get it, the media and other fans do that for us. Yes we need Gunn coming through as we need to plan for the future, but he is one of the best keepers in the world and he's ours!

Spot on. I'm really starting to dislike what City fans are turning into. Members of the Fifa 16/17 play League by the looks of it. Every goalkeeper makes mistakes (e.g. De Gea made some right rickets last season) yet our keeper has to be perfect 100% of the time.
Maybe it's because Joe's distribution has been brilliant for England at the Euros.
But being spoilt and thinking Fifa 16/17 is realy possible is my bet.

Thanks for your response. I do agree that we are different and that we mature at different times, however IMO though, at 21 you are no longer eligible to be still in the kid bracket and my comment was aimed at life in general and not professional sport. There are other professions whereby each and every move by professionals of similar age or younger is scrutinised and recorded.

My original point though was to posters who are using his age to protect him insofar as at what point does this argument become totally irrational as he is not new to top end football (end next season, the season after or whenever?)


Not sure about your last line though as my bank balance can be comfortably printed on the back of a postage stamp so I have no preconceived ideas what a bank statement printed on A3 Landscape to accommodate all the zeros means, but I know I, and many others would have to work a lifetime to earn what these fellas do in a year, so I am not overly sympathetic in that respect, but that's me, others may view that differently.

I do think you are correct in that it will get worse for him from now on unless another target is found by the media. He (with support) has to either face that challenge head on, and if he and his advisers don't believe he has the mental strength to overcome this, then maybe his only other option is a move abroad if he wants to continue playing at this level.

Hopefully, after the Euros this will all die down and Raheem can knuckle down preparing for next season and let's see what that brings for him.

I don't think he's a top top keeper for good reason. If you watch his saves objectively 9/10 the saves declared world class by all and sundry are routine saves you expect any keeper at the Pl level to make.
A clever little thing he does is when he knows he's beaten he will stand there as if he had absolutely no chance whereas at least other keepers would have a go. So it looks like he was beaten by pure class rather than beaten because he's shit.
I will concede there is something he's very good at: acting. I can't remember any time he has ever dived for a save (he could easily make)and it not looked like he was going to win an Oscar. He's nothing but a showman for the camera who does the odd good save, but fucking hell I do the same on Sunday's minus the cameras

Corrigan also got loads of shit at first when he made a number of mistakes. He turned it around. If Corrigan was our keeper now from his form in the early days judging by the reaction to Hart Ric wouldn't get his servers up and running for weeks. We have a great keeper and Pep like Pellers will see that first hand.
