Racist incidents on the rise?

British politics has been in a bad way for a while now. The state of the country reflects that.

The manner in which this vote has come about and the reasoning behind it has little to do with mainstream politicians or political parties though. Their (leave) campaign was an overtly racist campaign which mobilised lots of people to vote. Now i've seen in the other thread as well that people are getting very very pissy if they are accused of being racists for voting to leave the EU. Well the reality is that their vote, whatever their own personal rationale, propped up the racist agenda of UKIP and Farrage. That is deeply disappointing for someone who is British by birth and by attitude, but who isn't white and who knows that their life in Britain will be irrevocably changed by this vote.

We will have to agree to disagree mate on the reasons why people voted to leave, myself included and whilst ive no doubt some where motivated purely by immigration and no doubt racist opinions, i dont for one minute accept it covers the majority or myself and i dont believe a Britain outside of the EU will suddenly become a right wing playground either.

I get pissy at being called a racist or the insinuation that by my vote i am because its just not true.

In the same way I've no doubt some remain voters are also not very nice people in life but wouldn't dream of accusing all remain voters of sharing the same views or indiscretions.

Had our politicians consulted the British public over the last 40 years with every major change to what was an agreement to enter a common market, im almost certain we would have said yes and last Thursday would never have happened. They didn't and are now paying the price in the same way politicians across Europe are in danger of paying the price if they dont realise they cant just do what they want without the will of their people.

Politics needs to change forever and for the good and we need a new breed coming through that represents everyone in society, not just the few.

The Leavers still have their heads in the sand about why many fellow Leavers voted out. It's there, in plain black and white and for all to see yet it's still denied. Wonder how far it will have to go before, if at all, it is eventually agreed that this vote was won on the most horrendous, bigotry campaign in British history.

And no, that's not calling all leavers racists and it's not saying there aren't solid arguements to be made, as they have been on this forum, to leave.

Rupert Murdoch, the Australian, has a lot to answer for.

An excellent reply.

I find it unacceptable that people who voted to leave are being pressured to justify their decision for doing such. The main reason being that they are having to defend themselves against the stereotypical accusation of racism due to an unsubstantiated claim of guilt by association.

Now i understand and accept there are twats who did vote solely from a racist viewpoint......but to tar the majority with that brush is unfair, insulting and plain wrong.

Not a majority but enough to have won. And that is what is important.

Jews are leaving France in record numbers because of racism.

Racism in Poland is far, far worse than here.

The UK is still a very good place for minorities to live, and will continue to be so after we've left the EU.

True radical Islam is the major concern for most

They interviewed a guy on the news the other day who actually had a swastika tattoo. He claimed (and presumably genuinely believed) that he wasn't racist. That's the thing with these people: they don't actually think that they're racist. Hence the phrase "I'm not racist, but..."

There are too types of anti-immigrant people. Those who focus on the affect on public services of a large number of people moving to an area and the government not matching it with an increase in funding to deal with it. And that's fair enough. And then there's the "I don't recognise my country any more." Which is basically code for "there are too many foreigners." Ironically the latter was something I heard (amongst other places) from expats living in Benidorm.

It's not a massive surprise that the leave vote has led to an increase in racist incidents. When governments (and in this case the people) make a decision, it legitimises the view, and makes people more confident in expressing it. Racists see the vote as an acceptance of their views in the mainstream (which it absolutely isn't, of course). We've seen similar patterns before in other countries. When Russia introduced a law to criminalise the promotion of homosexuality, we saw an increase in homophobic attacks from people who viewed that as official backing for their views. When Egypt introduced a law saying that women had to cover up, sexual harassment against women increased because it was seen as official backing by people who feel they have the right to control what women wear. And this is why we've always had to be very careful at discussing immigration, even though there are plenty of legitimate, non-racist reasons to worry about it. And why things like Nigel Farage's poster are grossly irresponsible. They either reveal Nigel Farage to be a racist, or show that he shamelessly panders to racists.

Don't really want to be compared with the Eastern European countries, but Urmin is pretty much right in that the opportunities and protection offered to minorities in the UK is great compared with the majority of Europe and for that matter the world. Next time your in Spain take a look at the colour of the skin of the guys sweeping the streets

Sorry, what? That is a ridiculous comment. And even if it was true, what the hell is wrong with someone cleaning the streets? What's that got to do with the current levels of hate crime in the UK?

Not so sure I could have stopped myself from reacting to those scrotes if I was on that tram!

Fook me...
Likewise,i'm pretty sure i'd have lost it.And it makes me piss how so many just sat their in silence, they should be ashamed.

Why do people care about what colour someone's skin is or where they were born? I genuinely don't get it. If your a good bloke I'll get on with you, if your a knob head I won't - why does race/religion come into it?

Some idiots in the UK need to remember our history. We colonized countries all over the world. British culture is diverse by nature & that's what I think makes us unique. Those two idiots on the met can be deported to wherever for all I care.

The singer Jamelia was called a black bitch this week, the first time ever and in front of her 2 kids,i don't know if its related to the vote but there has been a lot reported over the last few days, enough for Cameron to speak about

Don't think I could have either, can't believe how many people just stood there and watched.

Absolutely spot on Billy.

Allegedly......and,while inexcusable if true,it was in relation to a road rage incident where she was apparently driving like a twat.
