Frankly, as someone who voted Remain, the allegations that anyone in favour of brexit is racist was pathetic, slanderous and ultimately counter- productive

That being said, I am still not sure what would be the benefit of the supposed "voice" and how leaving the EU would benefit the "many", and I would say the pro-brexits are gullible idiots who have been had.

Just my view. I still blame primarily the politicians solely because they shut down all discussion of immigration in the name of racism and drove millions of normal, decent non-racist people to farage and Co.

I'm ALMOST inclined to a agree, but I don't think they condoned it.
I think it's more a case of some of the leave campaign played on immigration knowing full well it would attract the racist vote too.
And whilst Farage wasn't 'officially' part of the leave campaign, I don't think the leave campaign went out of their way too much to distance themselves from him either. I think they notionally employed the 'unofficial' status, but enjoyed the benefits of the UKIP campaign too.

It's almost certainly true that the leave campaign benefitted from the votes of some racists (but was it to the tune of millions? I'm not so sure). Regardless, you can't blame leavers for that. You can't blame sensible leavers who just voted to leave, and you can't claim they condoned racists.

We absolutely shouldn't brush the racists under the carpet though - we have to acknowledge there's plenty about, and they aren't all far right extremists.

The problem is, it's not just the 'racists'. I'm sure out and out racists who are involved in hate crimes and overtly demonstrate their stance are in a very small minority. The problem lies within those that have been brainwashed into thinking in certain ways by a malicious campaign designed to divide the country. People that you wouldn't necessarily associate with being racists but that little inner voice inside, backed by their favourite newspaper and a trail of smears, lies and false promises just couldn't help themselves in a private vote.

Colin, you're a super intelligent guy. You and some of the other outers on here have made stronger arguements to leave than any of the politicians I've heard. But I really don't understand this defensiveness of how the vote was run. There was a continuous vindictive and malicious campaign from two right wing media outlets that in my opinion there is little doubt they played the biggest role in winning this referendum. The Sun and the Dail 'Fail' are derided day in and day out on this forum, labelled as racist outlets that print lies and brainwash people. I'm pretty adamant that the very same intelligent people that have argued the leave case on here are some of the people that have slagged off these newspapers on this forum. And yet you can't see the correlation between this victory and the campaign that was run by those papers. What's the audience reach of those two papers on a weekly basis? 20-25 million people? What would be the demographic of the readership and does that relate to the demographic of the Leave voters?

This post below that I posted before your reply is us more or less agreeing. I think it's clear that real racists are in the very small minority. What is unclear is just how many were tapped into by media outlets to the point that it affected their vote. I would honestly guess that that number would run into the millions but that's just my opinion. Propaganda is an incredibly powerful tool.

I agree with your comment regarding the usage of cash, but please don't be taken in by an immigrant 'per head' figure. Do you seriously, honestly, I mean hand on heart, believe that anybody on this planet of ours can realistically calcuate such an ever changing figure. Particular without having open access to the movement of money from the UK overseas and vice-versa? Anybody remotely serious about economics would refrain from quoting such spurious nonsense.

I don't mind about getting something back. What I do mind is being told don't worry everything will be fine and you'll thank us later when you have no idea of my situation.

But I might not be as motivated by self interest as you think. My number one worry in Europe at the moment is the rise of fascism and to me the break up of the EU could put us all in a very dangerous place.

Two men and a teenager have been arrested over a suspected "hate" crime on a tram in Manchester city centre.

Police were made aware of alleged racial abuse at around 07:40 BST on a tram travelling towards the city centre after a video was posted online.

Two men, aged 20 and 18 and a 16-year-old boy, were detained on suspicion of affray, Greater Manchester Police said.

The video shows a man on a tram at Shudehill being called "an immigrant" and told "get back to Africa".

'Absolute disgrace'
Footage indicates that the man targeted then retorted with: "How old are you? Are you 18, 19? You are extremely ignorant and not very intelligent. Do you know that?"

One of the men continued to shout "get off the tram now", as he spoke.

One of the group, who were holding beer bottles, then apparently approaches the man and flicks alcohol at him, as a passenger shouted: "There's a baby there - there's absolutely no need for that".

As the youths got off, the victim said to himself: "Seven years in the military," as other commuters told the three, "You are an absolute disgrace. A disgrace to England".

Police said the suspects were being held in custody for questioning.

This is what I don't understand about people saying the working class vote is a vote against the establishment. Well guess what you're going to get next year, and the year after and the year after that. A Conservative establishment without the shackles of European laws to truly fuck over the working class in northern towns like they have done so many times before.
