John Stones

I have probably watched Denayer a dozen or so times over the last two years, and for Stones you could probably double that. My argument isn't that Denayer is better, my argument is that we don't know who is the better fit out of the two to play in our set up, so to spend 50m at the expense of an equally promising player just seems ludicrous.

We are buying based on potential with no actual track record of showing enough patience to persevere with a defender unless he hits the ground running. Kompany is probably the only centre half of the last 6 or 7 years who has been a proper mainstay for longer than 18 months (barring injuries). So you will have to excuse my pessimism when it comes to me expecting us to show patience with a young kid, who was in and out of a midtable side last season, while we are trying to compete on four fronts. And you will have excuse my bewilderment at us spending 50m on the privilege when we have a player of similar age, ability and reputation playing in his exact position already.

He was dropped for a couple of games due to high profile cock ups, but a lot of his out time was due to injury. iirc.

i dont get this 50mil price tag, who dreams these figures up, that puts him in the bracket of the best in the world and hes done nothing yet to suggest hes that.
when we won at everton dzeko made him look very ordinary indeed
...over two years ago when he was 19/20?

you have to pay for potential sometimes so that you don't end up with a roster similar to ours with old overpaid players who are now past their prime and next to impossible to get rid of. I hate that we are trying to play hardball with Schalke and Everton now. We just got PEP GUARDIOLA, its not the time to start haggling clubs over 5-10 million.

Seen quite a few reports of EFC firing off bids for central defenders: Williams, Fonte, Bruno Martins Indy. What have they been doing all Summer?

Waiting for our money ;-)
Yes but when a player says I want to go, and you've got a club bidding for him, you don't wait until a fortnight before the season to start moving. maybe it's not as it looks.
Everton fans on here seem to be big fans of their new regime. I guess they want to believe in them.

I understood there is no new regime, just a new investor. Bill's still there, right ?

A friend of mine who support Everton believe that Ronald Koeman has seen enough now after 2-3 games to start getting new players in. They've lost all their preseason games so far I believe as well.

Everton beat Barnsley 3-0 and MK Dons 3-1, lost to Dynamo Dresden 2-1 and drew in normal time to Real Betis 1-1(losing penalty shootout 4-3)

the sale of stones will not mask over the extent of which everton as a club are so distant from the football elite. the infrastructure of the club has to be right first, and there is a lot of work to be done on and off the field. stones and lukaku will leave for certain and we will only have 4 weeks in which to replace them and a few others. progress will not be rapid and over the next few seasons we may see the results or stagnate as is the norm. commercially we have to improve , and can see a few seasons of turmoil

Course he can be wrong, but I think we know enough about him to know he will have had a good look at Denayer and my guess is he will keep him here as our 4 th centre back , but if he doesnt it may be a mistake but it wont be because he hasn't bothered looking. I think the reason we seem to be out of the fullback market is from what he has seen from Angelino and Maffeo.

And Zaba's reportedly staying.
