Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

He's been great in pre-season, Rodgers seemed reluctant to start him to begin with but once they got beat in Gibraltar the door just opened up for him. He's barely put a foot wrong so far, he's been Celtic's best player in their last 2 champions league games. He'll get the best player in Scotland award this season, he's actually good enough to be involved in our first team this season.

Not surprised Enrique said this, even in the brief moments yesterday, it looked like he was on the wrong team.

Amazing dribbling from Roberts. Getting by players for fun, looks a real talent! Should definitely be in our first team next season.

Does anyone know the thinking behind an 18 month loan period. Seems quite unusual.

Celtic wouldn't take him for 6 months as there's no real benefit for them.

12 months would be pointless as he's unlikely to come back here in January and make a real impact.

So 18 months gave him a chance to get settled in Scotland and at the club, have a preseason and hit the ground running this season.

Hopefully he'll help them get into the CL and then he'll pick up some great experience, and quite possibly a Europa league KO run.

is it me or does he lack something when in the final 3rd maybe he does not look up at times or keeps the ball to long and his finishing could be better
but a working project and i sometimes don't like long term loans but this lad cost us £10million so we need to make our minds up. maybe sell him on with a view buy back or bring him back now to work under pep and let him take up a place in the squad of 25 and sell or loan Jesús Navas to celtic

He's a 19 year old lad who's still learning the game who cost us £5 million up front (the rest of the £11 million are addons which will need to be tripped). I thought his finishing is good myself and as said earlier he doesn't always have the option of having someone to pass to.

Navas is worth more to our 1st team squad at this moment than Roberts would be. There's a piece here: https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...s-theo-walcott-celtic-manchester-city-arsenal that claims it was at his or his advisors insistence that the loan was for 18 months.

Why exactly do we need to make our minds up now anyway?

Jesus Christ. Delete this post. The entire thing is aids.

I know this will have been asked before, but say we get drawn against them in the CL, I take it he can play against us?

I think this happened before with Chelsea and and Cudicini. I think UEFA ruled that the player could play.

why pay whatever we did to fulham and then loan him out to a lower level football league in scotland ????????? why not leave him at fulham in the championship and let him learn there sometimes it really piss me off that a young talent like roberts is signed knowing he is not going to get a chance in our first team but we needed to sign him to keep him out of the others hands just in case he turns out to be very good its a funny old game

we are now at a level when signing young good talent means more to us sticking them in the 2nd team squad or put them out on loan so the other big clubs don't give them a chance to shine and hit it off and make there name elsewhere. its a dirty game we are playing and stocking up on youth only for the big signings like Yaya and the rest to take the piss like last season

he got six months here, it was apparent he wasn't ready here so we loaned him out. He will probably get CL football with celtic, something he wouldn't have gotten with fulham

It happened with Courtois against Chelsea as well, he could play against us.

I've been thinking about this for a little while and after seeing him for Celtic a few times now you can obviously see similarities in playing style with Messi (Obviously not stating the same level but at least the same style). Been thinking, could Pep try him as a false nine like he did with Leo at Barcelona?

This is why he should have gone to the Euros. Roy Hodgeson should hang his head in shame - was it that he didn't scout him or that he didn't fancy him. Best English talent I've seen in years. Hope Alardyce has better sense.

You on a real downer at the moment?

Why would we leave him at Fulham when they weren't playing him? The plan when he signed was (I believe) to loan him out immediately but Pellegrini wanted to get a good look at him first after seeing him in the flesh. It was decided (possibly by him going off the article I linked earlier) that it would be better for his development if he was playing more regularly which he wouldn't have got with us (and no, he wasn't ready for us then). Where do you get this idea that we're stockpiling all of the decent youth prospects just to stop other clubs getting them? Do you really think none of them will get a chance with us because they're not good enough? If so why the hell would we buy them in the first place.

Some great stuff. One turn left a Barca
defender totally for dead. Although he did over do it and make a few mistakes it amazes me how few mistakes a manager will tolerate from a young player compared to a Bony or Kolorov. Can't wait to see him fight for a City shirt next year. Roberts, Sane, Jesus, Moreno, Nacho, Sterling, Diaz, Sacho are a frighteningly good set of young players.

Some quality moves against Barca. He is a real top liner in the making. Having said that he is still developing and this season in Scotand will allow him to further develop, as he is still young. So I think it was the right decision to send him somewhere where he can play every week.

Don't know if serious or not but no way he should've gone.
