Do you reckon he should have the nuts and just declare - over to you Pakistan sort of thing?

No but we should have hit out a little bit earlier today so that we could have. There's no point declaring tonight and then having to set defensive fields if they build a good partnership or two.

No just because we haven't got a top class spinner and Cook always thinks the opposition will score 6 an over if needed if wickets were still in hand! It'll be like I said bat for 45 to an hour tomorrow morning then declare 360+ they ain't getting that. lets see how the Pakistani's respond to pressure.

Cheers lads. Still learning about this tremendous game.

Appreciate your insight.

There are two schools of thought with declarations. One is to dangle a carrot where the number of runs needed are possible in the overs remaining. This is what England would be doing if they declared over night but like Waspish said England don't have the spinner to risk this option and the wicket isn't exactly deteriorating in front of our eyes. The second option is to bat the other team out of the game. It gives you less overs to win but you can set attacking fields and put the opponents into a negative frame of mind when they try to bat out the day. Commentators, journalists and ex-players always seem to say they'd dangle the carrot but the truth is it very rarely happens to the extent that they say. Certain teams and captains have done it over the years but not many, especially in recent times when scoring rates mean that games can change so quickly.

Cook doesn't have any balls. He stares at his shoes whilst his ECB paymasters rim him up the arse.

Spot on Cook is a mr nice safety first guy, he doesn't want to have to make the hard decisions and if you have the players that will and can make the difference he will look good as a captain. Looking at an alternative captain who thinks out the box I cant see one, we all know Roots next in line but I see him as a captain similar to Cook and the ecb will love that.

Thank you, mate. Really enjoyed and appreciate it.

I guess that's what makes it a truly great game. I can understand why folk don't like it, but I do enjoy it.

So.....were looking at a draw then most likely? lol

I'd say Broad is due a brutal spell of bowling and if he can get a couple of early wickets then who knows, eh?

Despite my knowledge I find it hard seeing a captain outside of Cook.

Root, or maybe Stokes in a few years....maybe.

Not necessarily, there's a lot of uneven bounce and batting out 80 overs on the last day of a test match is always tricky. One thing that's true is that England were completely outplayed by Pakistan for two and a half days but they weren't able to get away from England and now they're going to have to bat really well to not lose the match. They have a long tail too so if England can get them two down by lunch, 5 down by tea then that evening session would be a belter. I sure hope the crowd is better tomorrow, bit disappointed by the attendances this summer because it's been a really good series.

Please never give Root the captaincy.

Agree but with him being vice he is next in line! For me Root should concentrate on his batting for rest of his career and like I said Broad should be the next captain, it will be a change to have a bowler as captain for once. Here's one for you who was Englands last captain who was a bowler only?

Hot headed, injury prone, already has a lot on his plate with his batting, bowling and fielding and finally because he's just not very bright.

So, he could have been a footballer :)

However. Cook is a bright lad, just a a bit weak and no balls.

Great with the bat.

A bit like with the England football team - no leaders really stand out.
