I was less referring to him talking about the news being delayed, than his point about the nationalisation of sport. I recall years ago Daley Thompson getting slated in the media for daring to whistle during the national anthem - as if he was winning the gold for 'Queen and country' - he was winning it for himself, as all athletes do. They arent symbols of a country; the Olympics shouldnt be about one country trying to prove it is better than another country, it should be about one individual being better than the rest in competition. I love the Olympic sport as much as anyone, but it doesnt mean the coverage can't be criticised, and the BBC obsession with the medals table is OTT.
Anyway, the author of that article and his like wont need to worry soon, cos ESPN has snaffled the coverage rights in future, so the BBC coverage will be secondary and much reduced. And, bless 'em, those annoyed about having to pick up their remotes to switch between BBC channels to follow the coverage probably wont need to bother.
