Pep's tactics

Pep could lose to Klopp. But it wouldn't be a tragedy.

Like I said many times on Barca board where people said Pep will struggle in PL his style is best suit to long tournaments like national champs, because Pep hardly give a chance to small teams. Consistency in beating weaker side is a key.

Yet another good piece on Guardiola's tactics, this time from Michael Cox (Zonal Marking):

http://www.espnfc.com/club/manchest...ruyne-silva-putting-title-beyond-rivals-reach
"While Manchester City won two Premier League titles with the system created by Roberto Mancini and (initially) maintained by Manuel Pellegrini, it never seemed entirely cohesive. It was a 4-2-3-1..."
Surely Pellegrini started off with a 4-4-2 formation and only transitioned to 4-2-3-1 later.

Bayern had problems with Dortmund in 2010/11 and 11/12 - did not win one match then. And similar teams. But we already were winning the matches against them again in the treble season.

Dortmund - or Klopp - is just the most prominent coach with this tactics - the Bundesliga was full with teams that followed his tactics even if in the last two season that "trend" is changing again. But - I watched parts of Liverpools match last weekend and was surprised that this team can rotate the ball very well, too and not just run and press.
They were great at rotating the ball in the first half when Chelsea sat off and watched them do it alright, they couldn't do it under pressure in the 2nd.

It's very simple, small thing but I LOVE the way we put pressure on the ball and cut off passing lanes after immediately after losing it. Seems as if half the time we lose the ball we get it right back within 3-4 seconds. In my opinion that is the biggest difference from last year defensively. Such a simple small thing, which everyone learns before they've sprouted their first pube, but when executed the way we've been doing it last few matches the opponent feels constantly under pressure. Hard to do for 90 minutes but I also think Pep has taught the players when to catch their breathe and chill, and when to bust their ass. How to work smart not hard.

(I'm aware my little drawing looks like the work of a 5 year old)

In this scenario player B has just lost the ball...

The player closest to the ball, player B, applies intense instantaneous pressure on the ball, which is great, but what makes the difference is the way Pep has drilled the idea of cutting off the passing lanes into the minds of players A and C.

It was a pet peeve of mine last year how we never seemed to cut off the passing lanes. Yaya was the biggest culprit (no surprise) but even the players like Fernandinho who has a great work rate were guilty of it. Sergio has really improved with this "off the ball defense" from what I've seen. Nolito is very good at doing this as well, Kolarov as well. KDB could use some work, but considering what he does with the ball I can overlook it.

To be fair, it's one of those things which is much easier to see from up top or on TV than on the field.

Fully agree.
A win v Liverpool doesn't give you any more points than a win v Bournemouth.
If you can consistently get the 3 points v everyone below top 6 you should already come a very long way.
The way the team is playing now should make that possible.

Refreshing watching us knowing an opposition player won't run through our midfield anymore and it looks like we're defending well on set pieces.

Will KDB be out of the team by then?
Jeez, just let him have his opinions. When all 4 of Silva, KDB, Gundogan and Fernandinho are fully fit and available to play the same game (still not happened yet), Gudogan is going to replace SOMEONE. Or, Fernandinho will move into the back 4. Or, KDB will play wider. One of those HAS to happen, and he just posted his opinion on which he felt was most likely, based on the facts he had at the time, which were unquestionably that Silva had started the season looking more comfortable in Pep's system. He's allowed to have an opinion. Constantly bringing said opinion up to score some sort of victory over him is really quite petty. Just get over it! I'm sure you've posted many a thing that in hindsight looked ridiculous. We all have.

Maybe he was one of the many who took digs at Sterling last season :)

Thx mate. The schedule seems so brutal that I wouldn't mind City to have 1-2 more CMs of the same level now.

Although Pep's tactics are one of his main attributes , it is the way he gets players working for each other , there are no billy big bollocks in the team he expects everyone to give 100% but does accept players will make mistakes , as long as they keep to his plan he will back his players all the way .Its early days , but i believe he will take our club to the next level . Looking forward to a nice day out in Cardiff next May :)

Who rattled your cage knob rot??

It was very much tongue in cheek as we'd had the debate over silva, with which I was wrong I might add. Now instead of acting like wonder women and throwing your panties at me, stfu!!!
